Surprise upgrade to Gold
I checked my MR account today and was pleasantly surprised to see my status being upgraded to "Gold"!! ^
I had 47 nights last year and wanted to call MR customer service to request the upgrade. But somehow I was upgraded, without my request, and now I have 37 nights rolled over in 2010 and need only 13 more to retain "Gold".
Thanks for the nice gesture Marriott. I shall certainly have you in mind while making a reservation anywhere in the world!!

Congrats to you...
Certainly many have posted upgrade stories when close to the line, so no particular surprise but the nights rollover will make requalification easier for you for 2011.
And of course Marriott has risen in your estimation and increased in your likely choice, EXACTLY what loyalty schemes are meant to do.
A canny decision by Marriott, methinks....

Nice.
My guess is you had three stays early in 2009, so you got gold off the 12-month rolling window but were lucky enough to stay silver so the 37 days rolled over.

Congratulations. As already noted, this should help convince you to stay with Marriott. I had 48 nights and maintained Gold so no rollover but happy to still be Gold.

Nevertheless, as everyone mentioned Marriott has indeed earned my respect, with this gesture!

In that case your status upgrade was not a result of rolling 12-months.
I guess Marriott is putting a new spin on their old SOP of maintaining elite status when one hasn't earned the requisite nights. This has been done on a regular basis for elite level renewals. It happened to me 3 times in the past decade. With the economy the way it is I guess they are extending the same courtesy to elite status upgrades, which is probably a good move.

Well, I was made Gold late last year as part of the Twelve Nights to Gold promo. I did not meet the goal. I also had only 30 nights for 2009, so I wasn't even close for Gold outside the promo. Have stayed no nights yet this year.
Last week, I checked my account and I had dropped back to Silver. Looked this week after reading some of the reports in this forum. I'm Gold again. With 20 Bonus nights (I think those are my rollover nights from 2009, but for Silver, not Gold status).
Not sure what happened here, but I'm definitely NOT complaining.

I thought Marriott kept last year's status until end of Feb, and then it lowered if you didn't qualify. Or am I confusing this with AA's policy? My hubby's status is still gold on marriott.com, but it should not be, as he didn't qualify by any measurement.

It appears that ediemac1 was elevated to Gold temporarily via the Taste of Gold promotion, but since s/he failed to qualify then was dropped back to Silver. Temporary elevations as a result of challenges and/or Taste of Gold type promos, are just that temporary and are not extended to the end of the membership period unless one meets the qualification of the promo or challenge.

aaupgrade, you are absolutely correct. I was not surprised at the drop back to Silver at the beginning of the year. That was the terms of the promo. My surprise was at becoming Gold this week for no apparent reason. Again - not complaining!

I too was elevated to gold much to my surprise. I thought I was 10 nights short. I'm not complaining. We will be able to keep it since we have 21 nights scheduled during the year at various vacation clubs.

I was upgraded from Silver to Platinum, despite being 7 nights short of GOLD! No idea why, other than perhaps a large number of stays/nights in the last quarter of the year (as well as getting the top-level credit card and booking a dinner for 75 people at a full-service Marriott). I went right from corporal to lieutenant, skipping right over sergeant!
As others have said, this is smart business by Marriott to encourage the brand loyalty that these programs are all about.

It seems to me Marriott doesn't actually have the software to "roll over" the nights as we would all understand it to mean... ie simply carry them forward to next year as a remaining credit from the previous. In this case the rollover is actually more beneficial than just doing that.
From info provided on this thread and others, I think Marriott has counted the rollover nights and credited them as if they were bonus nights awarded this year.
So what's the difference..? The difference is in the rolling calendar.
In ediemac1's case he was a silver with 30 nights for 2009 so he had 20 nights to rollover which then gets credited as 20 "bonus" nights. THEN kick in the rolling calendar which counts these 20 nights and those stayed in the last 52 weeks... which was, er 30... So 20+30 is 50 nights, one newly minted GOLD
Taking sghorwitz situation, 43 nights at silver lead to 33 nights credited to 2010, added to the 43 nights in the previous year is 76 nights, and a new PLT member on the rolling calendar

@ BrightlyBob - Not sure about the math though. I had 47 nights ending in 2009. With this math, I would have had 37 "bonus" nights; with the 47 nights in 2009 I should have had 84 nights and hence a Platinum membership boost. Instead I was bumped up to Gold.
If the conversion was done strictly on the actual nights stayed in 2009 then it makes sense because of the 47 nights, 15 of mine were by signing up for MR Premier Visa card. So, taking 15 away my actual stays were 32 nights : minus 10 would be 22 "bonus" nights + 32 actual nights in 2009 = 54. Hence my upgrade to Gold.
