For travel on Continental, the clearing order will be:

1. Continental Platinum Elite
2. United Global Services
3. United 1K
4. Continental Gold Elite
5. United Premier Executive
6. Continental Silver Elite
7. United Premier
8. General population buy-up to F
9. Pay for play upgrade based on distance of flight
10. AA Ex+ perro
11. Friend of GA
12. People wearing nice sweaters
13. US CP
14. CO Plat. companion at a non-EWR station
15. CO Plat. companion at EWR -- is not possible.

ETA: CO Insider posted the real answer to this question while I was on the phone, before I had a chance to post it. I'm going to leave this up for humor sake -- no sense in telling me how wrong I am.
AA Ex+ perro is now AA Concierge Key so you have to move that up a few spots

Thanks for the feedback. :-:

Just curious -- has anyone that works for the organization ever attempted to do this? It's a royal pain in the . The GA's are never at the gate 2 hours prior to the flight and when they do show up invariably they tell you "there's 082502384023483234 elites already on the list, there's no sense in doing this, so I'm not going to bother."

I don't want to turn this into a deficiency of the companion elite upgrade process conversation, but sometimes it's worth repeating. If someone could just explain the logic in why handling companion upgrades this way is the best system I'd love to hear it.

It seems crazy that we can't add companions to the list at check-in. Minimizing agent interaction saves CO money, right? It also saves aggravation on the customer side too (esp. in EWR).

To CO's credit you guys are great in publishing access to the upgrade list so you can see where your companion is (and that they were actually added), but I, personally, find the whole process to be very .

Just curious -- do CO elite companions get access to E+ if on the same itinerary?

I would really like to see this part not happen. Exit row seats are getting harder and harder to grab as a Plat on CO already, adding all the UA fliers into the mix (including Prem Exec) is going to kill any chances.

I still think the Exit row policy needs to go back to Plat only.

This UA 1K is going to start flying CO a lot more now that he doesn't have to worry about UA flying to secure his upgrades!

Thanks CO!

Also, worth mentioning, we've posted an FAQ on continental.com.
A follow-up question is that in the old CO/NW alliance, NW Elite Companions were allowed on CO (and vice versa) and had priority after CO Elite Companions.

Is this the same with CO/UA? Is UA offering Elite Companion privileges for CO Plat/Gold Elites and is CO giving UA GS/1K/PremEx Companions privileges on CO?

I usually add companions on all segments at the ticket counter at my point of origin. Never had a problem with the agent refusing to do so. I once knew the key for companions (was GG PLC or something like that), but I haven't needed to educate anyone lately.

UA announced their changed on their site.

Gotta love the language:

Elite seating At any time from booking through check-in, you can request a window or aisle seat in the front of the Economy cabinContinentals version of our Economy Plus seating.

CO's version of E+. hehehe

From my experience, this change has already happened and isn't new news. Many many UA flyers have been able to book "Premium" and Exit Row seating on CO since the entry into *A.

I read their thread - I didn't see someone write that they think UA GS/1k should receive an upgrade on CO before CO's own Plats. That would be just about the dumbest thing I could imagine ever reading on FT - and would certainly show off how obnoxious some of those UA UGS people really are.

My heart goes out to our CO staff who will need to start dealing with them in increasing numbers.

Nope, quote was always there, my editing was some minor grammatical and punctuation mistakes.

And yes, xyzzy misinterpreted them also, but we talked privately and he missed my reference quote from vysean's message also.

Hi SF1K, yes, United's Elite customers will have the same access to our Elite instant upgrades for Y and B fares. Additionally, Global Services and 1K members will have access to instant upgrades for M fares just like Continental's Platinum Elite members.

Unless you're flying a route like BOS-SFO where even as a 1K it's a hard upgrade.
