Best Luxury Lodges in Africa

It is quite difficult to get an overview of the many diverse lodges and safari offers in Africa.

I want to recommend this website http://www.africatravelresource.com to anyone planning overland trips or safaris in East Africa or Southern Africa.

It is the most complete compilation of high-end accomodation in that region, with critical remarks and price indicators (click on lodges in each region).

P.S.: I only read their website and have not tried their services.

Indeed. There's actually "outstanding", "superb", "excellent", "very good", "good", "moderate" and "mediocre". (Maybe more that I didn't see.)

I would love to know the basis on which they decide how to categorise a lodge. Just looking randomly at some ratings, Kirawira in the Serengeti gets a mere "good" - I thought it deserved much more than that. Singita Ebony is "excellent" while Notten's is "superb". Now much as I love dear little Notten's even I am amazed at those relative ratings. Similarly Tshukudu in Pilanesberg is "very good" while the Sun City Cabanas is "excellent"!! That is just ludicrous.

I drove 10.000km from Kampala to Capetown. Now try to plan that kind of trip - by hearsay, internet or Virtuoso. With lodges priced from 100$ to 2500$, africatravelresource.com proved to be really helpful.

What does that have to do with the weird ratings on this website? And isn't this website part of the 'internet'?

Ya, compleat kak. We're supposed to believe that this site ranking thousands of lodgings in SA is reliable?

Very interesting site. I actually thought the reviews were quite accurate based on the 4-5 SA camps (Exter, Simbambili, Tinga and Phinda) I have visited.

Can you please give me your recommended website(s) for an overview of lodges in Southern Africa? Thanks.

Complex issues always appear weird at first. But go invest some time. You may understand.

Woaw, that's arrogant

And you still haven't answered the question. Or do you have an interest in that website somehow?

I don't think anybody is arguing against the concept of the site. But unless there is some sense that the relative ratings are consistent and impartial, one has to question what is driving their decisions. Commissions, maybe?

It is a handy resource just as a listing of what is available (though why do they even bother with an arbitrary sprinkling of city listings?). One can then do more research elsewhere before committing.

If you're looking for the best lodges in South Africa check out Singita Boulders and Royal Malewane, both spectacular properties.
