I had my first 'cube' yesterday: the salmon with kohlrabi one. Not impressed.

First, the cutlery is too flimsy and stubby - it's impossible to reach the bottom of the box with it. I had to tilt the whole cube on its side to get to the bottom, and then poke and prod with the stubby little fork to get the food to come out. A bit of turbulence and I might have had a lapful of salmon and cream.

Second, the muffin thing was just weird. If the whole idea is to allow one to have space to work while eating the meal, why give out a greasy cheesy bit of finger food? I'd much rather have some half decent warm bread rolls. It reminded me a lot of those TATL second meal snacks in Go.

Speaking of cleaning up, the wet wipe is gone from the utensil bag, too.

I don't get why they're so proud of this, it's an impractical tissue box shape and it's annoying to eat from. Also, the food is no better - although admittedly I've only eaten one so far.

Once again, SAS have fiddled with an aspect of their product that, while poor, was hardly number one on the list of groans on here. In doing so they managed to make it (in my view) slightly worse, while still managing to fill half of Scandinavian Traveller with back-slapping puff pieces about how wonderful it is. Blech.

The box looks very tricky to open on herro's video. Also it looks like there is plenty of waste generated. 'Cookin' who seems to be making these also did the previous SAS Plus boxes, which were larger and had more things in them: http://www.cookin.se/airline-catering/

Hey, what happened to the tablecloth?

Have always found it a bit pathetic, but with the new service concept it would make sense when mounting the meal. It is not nice to put the food on the table, which isn’t probably clean.

Also: where to put the cover from the yoghurt???

And as mentioned above: the wet wipe is gone.

At least: the hot towel is still there. Appreciated.

I must admit I rather like the new concept.
Huge improvement on food quality in the box.
Friendly service - hot towels.
Premium redwine gone alas.
But wonderful pralines served with coffee.
All in all a step up I think....

Tried the new cubes on 2 flights end of last month. The box itself has a really neat design, however food was mixed. The dressing bag is really hard to open and got my fingers all oily. Also think the 'hot sides' muffin was really not tasty.

The first cube I had was Beetroot salmon with pumpkin. Food was disappointing, salmon too dry and not much taste. First thought: the nice part really stops at the looks.

Second cube was roast beef with potatoes and asparagus. This time really positively impressed about the food quality, really good taste, and for sure a big upgrade compared to before.

In general it is a step upwards - but really depending on what the content.

On my CPH-LHR flight this afternoon, they had scrapped the tiny cutlery and added a full-size plastic set (outside the box) instead, that's certainly progress!

^^

Now let's get rid of the greasy muffin and replace it with simple, tasty, warm bread rolls.

Disgusting

This is coming from just an occasional SK flyer, but I have no idea what "improvements" they made. Frankly, I prefer having a tray to the silly tissue box. At least with a tray, things are organized and won't spill or drop (or if they did, it would be onto the tray). I was fortunate to have a free adjacent seat on most of my flights, and I needed every bit of table space, as did my seatmates.

Glassware for wine ^
Hot towels (only on some of the flights) ^
Chocolates (same as above) ^
Plastic cutlery :td:
Condiments insert :td:
Small portions :td: (I guess that's a good thing, because...)
Taste :td::td::td:

Worst part - the warmed "bread" bar thingy (mint and something or other on all flights). It was so disgusting that I had to ask for extra napkins to spit it out. Tried it again, just to make sure it wasn't a one off. Whoever thought that they were edible, let alone served, should be fired.

Seriously, this can't possibly be the best they can offer; prisons probably have better food.

I dunno, the Borg were known for being ruthlessly annoying. I think SAS has that down pat.

Having gone through a few of these boxes now, I can say on average the food doesn't seem much improved to me.

The box format itself would be great - if we were using chopsticks. I actually did and the coordination is much better

That "muffin" bar... several flavours in, yeah, no thanks.

Guess it's back to bringing a sandwich from Caviar Prunier and flying in Go for me. Ha.

I've had one that I thoroughly enjoyed and they gave us flatware and proper warm bread that day. But other than that, this is just... weird. And I'm an odd person who appreciates strange interesting things. This is a bit much.

That's what I miss the most with the new design. You could always rely on getting a nice warm bred roll.
But no not anymore...

Dipsas Aug 16, 2017 8:11 am

Had someone next to me the other day who looked literally sickened by the odd muffin bake... Mind you, I made the mistake of coming back to CPH on in BA Club Europe yesterday, and found myself longing for my SAS cube as I was despairing over three rubbery slices of chicken and a lonely cherry tomato. There was no coffee, and certainly no hand made pralines.
