It may seem "fun and cool" now, but unless you have a tireless thirst for tourists and street denizens, I could see the Upper Haight getting old real quick.
(I'm sure some Upper Haight lovers will chime in to defend the neighborhood, but personally, I can't stand it save the occasional trip to Amoeba.)
I'm biased having lived on 15th betweeen Church and Dolores for several years, but how 'bout that area (bordered by Market, Dolores, 20th, and Church, give or take a few blocks). From my perspective, the location can't be beat. Plus, we get a few more minutes of afternoon sun than those Lower Haight folks.
(I'm sure some Upper Haight lovers will chime in to defend the neighborhood, but personally, I can't stand it save the occasional trip to Amoeba.)

Hmm, maybe it is improving. I'll admit that I can't speak too authoritatively, as I tended to stay in the Lower Haight/Upper Market/Castro/Mission/Noe zone...

15th between Church and Dolores is fantastic. And walkable (or stumbleable) from Zeitgeist! ^

What are you suggesting: that I was selling or buying?
But seriously, it was pretty scary. The dope/acid dealers were never the most trustworthy bunch, but the crack dealing was very different. It felt like gunfire could erupt at any moment (it did a couple times within a block of my apartment). I don't scare easily in marginal neighborhoods, but I started to get plenty scared.

I live three blocks from there on Page near Pierce. The blocks around Webster can be pretty rough due to the proximity of the housing projects. It's actually a very nice neighborhood West of Steiner. I wouldn't want to live directly on Fell, Oak or Haight, which are likely to be pretty noisy, but the rest of the streets are fantastic.

So...I'm actually in San Francisco right now, and I've been checking out neighborhoods etc all weekend. So far my two favourites are: 1) Noe Valley--yes I know...baby carriages, loving families, and all that, but its close to downtown and far enough south to make it less painful to work. 2) Haight Ashbury...really fun and cool area, close to the park, and a pretty good connection to the rest of the city.
Definitely nots:
Anything Richmond or Sunset--too far.
Marina--too yuppie, I'm leaving the Northeast...don't want to find it in SF again.
SOMA is trying too hard to be New York...and San Francisco is not New York. Definitely not worse, but different.
Possibles:
Mission/Cole Valley/North Beach?
Thoughts? Comments? Corrections? Anything I've missed?

Mission - yes, check it out. Right next to Noe, so if you still like Noe, it is a couple block walk to the Mission, they almost blend together.
Cole Valley - right down the street from me (as is upper Haight) - worth checking out, good public trans options, Google shuttle.
Since you are practically looking in my neighborhood (Ashbury Heights) - PM me if you have any specific questions, I'm more than happy to help you out. Based on the post I made previously and your recent response, I'm probably inline with what you are thinking.

Hayes Valley is indeed a pretty good recommendation, quick to head south, but I'm not sure if there is much nightlife beyond a few bars. I'd still lean towards your Noe/Mission findings.

Good, depending. I lived at Haight and Laguna and loved it, and Hayes Valley at Hayes and Laguna is good too. Where you don't want to be is Haight and Filmore, that area has some really bad things going on at night, I'm not a suburban softie, but that can be a pretty dangerous block or so.

Not sure if you already found a place, but I'll add Glen Park to the list if you like Noe Valley. Close access to the Glen Park BART, J MUNI line and short walk to Noe Valley. Lots of new great restaurants opening too. Good luck on your search!
