Blargh, I totally forgot about all the Occupy protests. I managed to miss them all here in NYC, so would like to avoid getting caught up in them somewhere else!

I'm thinking that maybe we should stay in SF and then take some of your suggestions for things to do in Oakland if we want to explore that area. I did want to avoid the Fisherman's Wharf area, I would much prefer staying somewhere else, less touristy, but that's where the boats would be coming in so I think that's why my cousin wanted to stay there. She is from England, and I doubt that she will ever go back to SF, so it would be best to show her a good time.

Thank you everyone for your advice, I appreciate it!

All in all, I agree with you, would probably stay in SF. Fisherman's Wharf isn't a bad place, and is actually worth walking around for a few hours just to see the sights. Lots of nice hotels in the downtown/Union Square area.

Don't miss walking across the Golden Gate bridge if there are some nice days - the views are spectacular. There are even some nice little hikes in town with great views. http://www.trails.com/tcatalog_trail...lid=XFA036-052

Born and raised in the Bay Area. I saw the latest Oakland fiasco on local TV and had to assure my Chinese friends that SF was safe because we mined the Bay Bridge and will take it out to keep the violence on that side of the Bay.

On a side note, I was at a meeting at the Oakland Marriot two years ago and had a gun stuck in my side one block from the Hotel. Wallet and watch gone. OPD took a report but heard nothing since.

another vote for the museum

I highly recommend the Oakland Museum of California downtown. After an extensive remodel, they reopened (in 2010) two of the three floors: the art gallery and California history floors. The museum has one of the finest collection of Bay Area Figurative Art (Diebenkorn, Bischoff, etc.) in the world as well as temporary exhibits. It could definitely fill an afternoon or morning. If you have a mid-level or higher membership to an art museum - they often belong to the North American reciprocal museum membership organization and you can get in free.
