I'd rather have them do it that way than automatically because I might loose the chance to up my awards with the gift certificate option otherwise.
A while back Discover had a promotion where you would get $10 cash back for using the card for ANY purchase at Sam's Club. I spent about $8, and got $10 for doing it! Has anyone heard of them doing this again? (Warning though, I had to call them about 4 times to actually get the reward credited and I had to save the receipt for 6 moths until it credited)

I also got a mailer from Chase today for the first version of the Perfect Card which is called a Freedom Card. They sent me a double points mailer for groceries, drugs, restaurants... on top of the gas so I am happy about that!

For what it's worth .... I called Speedpass earlier this week b/c I never received anything. I found out that the system kicked out my application b/c of the address or something. I was concerned about the gas promo and they said I'd have to call the business office. Today I followed up and found out that they manually overrode something when I called earlier this week and I s/be receiving the Speedpass shortly, but because it wasn't activated by 9/21 (the date they were using as an extension to 8/30), I wouldn't be able to be part of the promo. When I complained some more and asked to talk with the Supervisor, he came back and offered me a $10 gift card -- the promo was good for a max of $20 so its not a horrible exchange.
My Discover is in the gas program in October so I'll see some savings coming from there shortly. It's sad when 2.65 is considered a good price for gas

. I run the AC all the time however, since it does not run off the engine in my car. Checking gas prices on line (my local site is http://www.raleighgasprices.com/ and gasing up at Costco helps, when I'm in the Durham area. Changing driving patterns and methods also helps. I'm trying to pretend there is an egg under my accelerator and drive accordingly and it does bump up the mpg by a few. I have always combined errands...I hate to make a trip for one reason, but I am particularly conscious of this when I take the 4Runner. I ride my motorcycle when I don't have to carry a load. Since I am really "outoftown" a lot, most of my miles are on rental cars, so someone else is usually footing my gas bill. Out of habit, I still fill up at the cheapest station which I try to note when I leave the airport, so I can catch it on the way back. It irks me that people think the Texaco on Century near LAX is convenient for gasing up, even tho it's the highest price station in the continental US.
Outoftown, ORD on Monday, MCO Tuesday, Chattanooga today

When filling up at LAX, take Airport (the street you take to go back to Hertz Return) North to Manchester, take a right (East) and in about one block there is a discount station on the right hand side that is much, much cheaper than that rip-off Texaco on Century Blvd. That is where I always fill up my rentals before return.

Fred Myers + Mileage Tip
1. Fred Myers (owned by Krogers) is building gas stations on all their new stores. They are found predominantly on the west coast. They feature a 3 cent discount using their card.
2. I read a report the other day that said the difference in fuel savings between 70 mph and 55 mph is 17%...so a less speed can yield substantial savings.

Speedpass Promo: enroll by 8/31, activate by 9/21

I just called this afternoon to double check the promo. I was told in order to get the gas discount, you have to enroll by 8/31 and activate the speedpass by 9/21. Since I enrolled on 9/8, I was not qualified for this promo. The representative said there's nothing she could do but they have different promo going on all the time. Of course I was not happy but politely insisted if I could talk to a supervisor. She put me on hold for a minute. When she came back after consulting with a supervisor, she told me that even though they could not put me on that expired promo, they would offer me a $10 "goodwill" credit that will be mailed out in mid Oct from Oklahoma. I took the offer right away!

The gas stations at the La Tijera exit off the 405, an Arco, Chevron, and 76, are also a cheaper (relatively speaking) choice for gas near LAX.

So, just to bring up gas-saving tips again... dunno if you all saw these articles, but they're relevant:
We Test the Tips (edmunds.com) - they test whether the common gas-savings tips really work or don't make any difference.
Hybrids: Don't buy the hype (cnn.com) - they claim buying a hybrid will save gas, but probably won't save you money
Diesel: ot just for truckin' anymore (cnn.com) - they say diesel is a good option, and point out why it hasn't caught on in the U.S.
Just thought you might want to read 'em since we talked about these issues at length previously.

Grocery Cards
Some Albertson's and Safeway's have gas at a competative price... plus with their club card you can save an additional 3 cents. The club card is free and can be obtained immediately.
Also, I found that Loaf 'n Jug (I believe their gas is branded Mini Mart) will give you 3 cents off if you use a Kroger, King Super (grocery store) or several other grocery store club cards. The club cards are free. The only state I found with Loaf 'n Jug is Nebraska, and these grocery stores are rare in the area, so you might want to sign up for the club card in advance to save the 3 cents.

Awesome Offer!
I just called Discover to activate my Gas Card and I got an incredible offer! I mentioned this website and the promotion I am giving them (I am the OP) The offer they gave me is nothing you can sign up for... just something I was offered out of the kindness of their heart.
They offered me $1 in Cash Back bonus for every transaction (no matter the cost) in the next 30 days with a maximum of $20 in rewards! That means I could buy a stick of gum on my credit card and make money off of it! So instead of the standard 1-5% I can feasibly earn over 100% cash back! Pretty sweet!
Pretty Sweet deal Discover! That is what I call customer service!

If there is anyone in the Phoenix area who needs a carwash, if you go to the Shell Station on McKellips Road and Scottsdale Road in Scottsdale you can save 20 cents off the price of gas if you also get a carwash. I find its a nice way to get two chores done in one fell swoop.

:bump:
The Exxon/Mobil Speedpass promotion is back. Save 5 per gallon at Exxon or Mobil for 90 days if you sign up for a new Speedpass.
See the (updated) original post in this thread for a link to the offer, more information on how to save about 18 per gallon, etc. Happy Driving!
