Screwed by E*Trade AGAIN!!
Just when you think customer service can't get any worse... there's E*Trade to prove you wrong.
I called (this is the third time I've contacted them) to be removed from all of their mailing lists (as I am still receiving their junk mailings).
After being hung up on (typical) I finally got hold of a supervisor. He insists they are not able to put in writing that I've been removed from their mailing lists. After past experiences with ETrade I've learned, if they don't put it in writing (like their promised miles for opening a new account) they can't be trusted to keep their word.
Any advice on what government agencies can be contacted to report "harrassment by mail?"
And as always AVOID E*TRADE (if they can't be trusted to keep their word, why would trust them with your money).

There was actually a woman in CA recently that won a lawsuit against a company for continuing to email her after she had opted out but I can't remember the details of it, but there was some law which enabled her to bring an action against them and win. Maybe it is a CA law. Sorry I can't recall the details.

I HAD an account with E*Trade. Tried to close it out, and they sent me all but 1 cent. Now, I didn't really care about the 1 cent, but I couldn't get them to stop sending me the junk mail, emails, or monthly statements. Finally, after almost a year of trying, I made them send me the penny back so that they could "close" my account, as I had originally asked!
I'm sure they lost a lot of money sending me email, regular mail, and then having to write a check, send it to me and reconcile it all for 1 penny!

I "spammed" them back until they sent me my 39 cents.
Note PERHAPS some of the e-trade stuff you get is NOT from them. Lots of sites have advertising for them and reciprical deals?

Federal Trade Commission or even SEC - I would think they would frown on this sort of thing.

No termination fee - that would have been really insane!

After reading the above posts, I felt that I needed to add my experience with an offer I received from E* Trade in 1999. I opened an account as a result of receiving the 10,000 Mileage Plus miles offer when opening an account with $10,000. The offer stated that the account had to remain open for a minimum of 6 months; however, there was no text on the mailer that indicated that the initial deposit had to remain in the account, subsequent offers were very specific, however, mine was not.
Shortly after opening the account, I made a few stock purchases and wrote some checks against the original deposit, bringing me below the original $10,000 deposit. A year later, no miles has been deposited into my United account. I contacted E*Trade in 2001 regarding the offer and received a very detailed letter, not a form letter, indicating that the offer required the account holder to maintain the original balance for at least six months. Disagreeing, I filed a complaint, as I had left the account open to this day. E*Trade contacted me, asked for the original offer letter, which I fortunately kept, and agreed that the offer was not specific enough about the initial deposit and agreed to grant me the 10,000 miles.
While I really was not expecting to receive the miles and was trying to make a point more than press them for 10,000 miles, I was surprised at their response and quite happy with the outcome. While this was my only exposure to a problem with E*Trade, I must commend them for siding with the consumer on this case.
