Ryanair additional (hidden) fees ?

I'm about to book my first flight with Ryanair and thus have still to experience what their newest extra charges will be.
To quote the T's & C's from their website:
For passengers booking from the 19/3/09 onwards and travelling with checked baggage, the online check-in fee of 5/5 per person/per flight will be charged.Checked baggage is charged per bag/per one way flight at a discounted rate of 10/10 for the first bag
Just to prep myself for any unwelcome surprises: Do I understand this to be:

* 15 for checking in online with 1 (under 15kg) checked bag
* 5 for payment handling fee

Total 20 additional to the quoted air fare ?
(not including the toilet-fare )

Thanks for your response(s) !

All those fees are optional - even the compulsory online check-in fee which is waived for promotional fares

If you want to check in a bag, and you don't pay with a Visa Electron card, and you opt for web check-in only, then yep, minimum 20 additional 'optional' charge applies.

while ryan air may charge more then everyone else, it is now the norm to charge for checked bags. Oddly enough the most notable airlines bucking the trend are US based LCCs, ala Southwest (2 bags free, down from their original 3 bags for free) and JetBlue (1 bag free, down from their original 2 bags free).

No, it's not. It may be so in the US for economy passengers, but most airlines outside the US still carry bags without a charge.
Oddly enough the most notable airlines bucking the trend are ...
... NOT those mentioned, but pretty well any non-US legacy carriers.

My understanding is that if you check in online and do not have hold baggage, the "online check in" fee will not apply. Confusing, I know.

This is true for bookings made before 1st May only

After 1st May the online check in fee will apply to all new bookings, even if you have hand baggage only; the only exception being travellers on certain 'promotional fares'.

So, if passengers with hand luggage only have to pay this fee, exactly what is it for?

These passengers print their own boarding passes and don't go near a Ryanair check in/bag drop desk.

So, what are they paying for?

They're paying for being duped.

"Air CON: How to beat the 'drip-pricing' pitfalls on budget flights" is a great reason why RyanAir isn't necessarily cheaper than your full-service fare, despite the stereotype.

Have you ever flown on Ryanair? My personal experience of Ryanair was that they were much cheaper than BA.

To be fair to FR, while the fee structure may be complex, there is nothing hidden about it. In fact, it's quite transparent.

All fees are listed here:-

http://www.ryanair.com/en/terms-and-...ns-tableoffees

and this is prominently linked to from the front page of the website.

It is now - but only because they had their wrists slapped

Things were different in 2009 when this thread was started. Don't know why it got reopened all of a sudden.

The site you quote is about making them quote "inclusive of mandatory fees" prices like EZY have done for ages (indeed, since well before they had to). My post referred to the presence of a prominent Table of Fees on their website. That has been around for ages, way further back than 2009 I'd think.
