Is transit visa req'd if traveling through Sochi airport as a US citizen?

Hello all,

I am looking at traveling from Tajikistan to Tel Aviv. The most direct flight I found was via Sochi, Russia (see below):

Somon Air 223 · Narrow-body jet · Boeing 737-300
Dushanbe - Sochi
Economy 4h 00m: 8:20 am — 10:20 am

Change planes in Sochi (AER) 2h 35m

Ural Airlines 829 · Narrow-body jet · Airbus A320-100/200
Sochi - Tel Aviv
Economy 2h 15m: 12:55 pm — 3:10 pm

I do not have a Russian Visa - but am not planning to leave the airport... just want to catch the connection. Do I need a transit visa to do this?

Unless this has changed recently, AER does not have a visa-free transit zone despite being an international airport. Unfortunately, this means that a valid Russian visa is required to connect through this airport.
