Two starters ... No
Fancied two starters and asked. Told no, it’s starter and main. Man next to me said he was not eating so I could have whatever starter he was not eating. Still no, had to have one starter and one main. Okay, I understand that I should not be given two starters if it in anyway prevents another passenger getting their choice but if not, why not?
A very Soviet lady in red enforcing the policy or is preferring two starters unacceptable?

airlines buy these meals according to load factor , so the basic rule is one per passenger
now ask yourself if i come to your work and ask you for an extra item from your company , regardless of what they are selling or prices , and i know you are just a regular employee , what will you answer ?
if the guy/girl next to you dont want . he/she is free to take it and then offer you his meal
if , for instance , at the end of the service there are menus left , if you kindly ask and the flight attendant is in a good mood , why not ??? i usually buy menus when flying (not buy on bard ....) but i can ask for an item i dont have (or they gave me very small quantity and i need more)
i had cases like this , empty flight because of many missed connection caused by weather or after a long nice chat with the FA sitting in front of me at emergency exit i received extra food or even champagne but its very rare

Last year I was offered an extra main course on a China Southern domestic flight in premium economy cabin, because there was extra left near the end of flight and the flight attendant thought I was hungry (I consumed everything completely without any waste) - as a result had 3 meals (2 regular and 1 extra) in an 6-hour flight.

That's really weird. SU FAs would normally go above and beyond to please customers in C. I assume you don't have a status with the flop, but if you do, send them a complaint and they will most likely throw a few miles at you. If you don't (have a shiny one), best you can expect is a door2door delivery of Novichok.

Its a lot of food. Also there used to be 4 mains, its now down to 3.
I have always ordered two starters, and often skipped the main. The food ex-SVO has gotten way too Russian, which is not bad, but doesn't bode so well with people who are not accustomed to having soup with sour cream and dark bread ( really, really Russian). Posted a review of my last trip here
Service is still spot on.
