I would suggest you try www.tripadvisor.com. It has over 500 posts discussing this hotel.
Also, with Cancun properties, Spring Break for colleges often makes a huge difference in the reviews. Some cranky adults like to sleep.

What is best to do in this situation? I have an upcoming reservation there with points. Do I stay? Do I ask for my points back and compensation since I explicitly booked a Carlson property? Do I ask them to move me to a comparative property owned by another chain, say Marriott or Hyatt?
What is the best way to maximize this?

I spoke to Carlson about our reservation and they basically passed the buck and said... no longer our property, so sad you are gold, so F*** you. When we called the hotel, they said, we don't care if you are cryptonite with Carlson, we have nothing to do with them. Be glad we decided to honor your reservation
Wow... just wow. I thought Carlson has sold enough hotels to have this down pat and make it a smooth transition, but it is basically.. fend for yourself and F*** you and you wont get any of the perks you promised you when you booked this
