Problems at Radisson Spitsbergen

Anyone else had negative experiences with negligent, rude or even aggressive staff at the Radisson Spitsbergen? PM welcome.

Care to share what you encountered so that others could know what you're talking about? What you've written is somewhat vague.

Waiter threatened to beat up guest - in front of other guests.

No manager on duty found at hotel to sort out the crisis. In fact, even the concept of someone "being on duty" was alien to the hotel, at any time.

GM answers email in a tone that indicates he endorses rude staff behavior.

A disgrace to the Radisson & Rezidor Groups. (Hotel owner: Hurtigruten)

Now building a legal case at seat of credit card payment.

A bit more detail, please? Were you the guest, why did the waiter threaten to beat you/them up, and what was the "crisis"?

Since I gather you've written emails, sharing what you wrote and what they responded would be handy.

No need to share details here. Just looking for people who share bad experiences at that hotel. Or US lawyers going against that group. PM welcome.

Ah, going to sure them. That'll show them!

You're much better off attacking it where it hurts them. Tripadvisor.com, Facebook, etc.

The hotel owners (Hurtigruten) have a kind of monopoly on the island and think they need not care about anyone: guests, Radisson brand, security procedures, law, whatever ...

US lawyers fighting court cases in Norway

I am not too sure that you will have much success using an US lawyer fighting a civil suit in Nord-Troms tingrett in Troms. The good thing, is that Troms has a larger number of hotels than Longyearbyen, so you don't have to put the lawyer up at the Radisson Blu in Troms, as they might have problems getting proper help there as well!

The hotel and the local franchise is Norwegian registred, and AFAIK the main office of the Rezidor group is in Belgium. I do not really see where the US lawyers would be of any use.

Did you contact the local police in Longyearbyen? The Norwegian Criminal Code is in force on Svalbard, and threatening to beat up people is a crimnal offence in Norway (Straffeloven 227)

Many thanks for the good input. We've contacted hotel management, hotel owner and officials. Depending on the feedback, we consider suing for damages at the seat of the credit card, used for payment (NY, USA).

But have you made a formal report ("anmeldelse") at the local police (in Svalbard: Sysselmannen)?

Yes. Wrote to the Sysselmannen. Waiting for an answer. There was no time for a formal complaint on the spot, due to departure of our flight. Can we make a "formal" report, even from a distance?

The little aggressive waiter is unimportant, and life has already sorted him out in a way. The problem is that the hotel owner tolerates the behaviour - even adds insult to injury - and has absolutely no procedures in place (no "manager on duty" at any time, reception staff doesn't even know the concept !!!) That must be against Norwegian law too?! Image a fire breaking out, or a polar bear walking in.

It's like there is no captain on that ship ...

Do we really have that sort of thing in the Nordics? Sounds terribly American to my ears.

Hotels don't always have managers on duty, especially late at night. There is no general legal requirement to have managers on duty on-site.
