Plane changed from 787 to A330-200

Hello,
i ll fly on Qatar in Business from Doha to Phuket and i just notice the plane has changed.
I m bit concerne, should i expect the full flat seat ? or the old red seat ?
What is the main difference between the two planes ?
Thank you

The A332 fleet is all lie flat in 2-2-2 config. There are two configs - either with the newer seat (the same as the A319 and A340) or the older, but more spacious 777 style seat.

Either seat is basically OK, although if travelling alone one does have to cope with a seatmate. Getting out of the window seats requires climbing over the aisle seat if it is reclined.

I prefer the 330 and 777 if I am traveling with Mrs m4l but agree that for traveling solo the 787, 350 or 380 are much better

diego454 have no fear the sloping seat A330-200 seats are long gone! In fact there is only one three class A330-300 with sloping seats and it is to be retired as soon as its replacement arrives. All other widebodied aircraft have lie flat seats.
The main difference between them is that the B787 has 1-2-1 seating in J while the A3300-200 is 2-2-2.

For further comparison look at http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/qatar...seating-q.html, http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/qatar...l#post25475940 and http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/qatar...-fleet-30.html

Thank you for your reply,
i ll fly with my fiance who is really happy to seat next to me whereas on the 787 she was behind me.

Anyway we will fly in April and i still hope the plane will be switched again with a 787, given the following link, the usual plane should be a 787

I just flew QR 840 DOH-HKT in J today with my wife in a A333. For all those, who fear a major downgrade from a 787 or 350: I actually slept very comfortably in the lie-flat seat, which is a bit more narrow, but at the same time very 'cozy' und good for all positions as well.

locoire welcome to the QR forum.

I am so pleased that you enjoyed the flights. I am also pleased to hear of your positive experience with the A333. I am afraid that many on this forum dismiss the 2-2-2 seat aircraft as outdated and therefore inferior to the 1-2-1 seat aircraft.

Well I also have an equipment change from 787 to 330 on both legs of my DOH-WDH-DOH in May.

Had booked window seats behind each other on 787 for Mrs AITF and me. Now we have been re-located on aisle seats behind each other on 330 (so now, each of us ends up sitting, separately, next to an unknown person). No access to seat map on the web - is this now tough luck?

only just jointed but wanted to give my opinion, I was travelling BHX to HKT and was initially disappointed that we had been swapped from a 787 to a 777, but was pleasantly surprised. I can see the 787 being great for a single traveller cimpaired to the 2-2-2 config, I felt the 777 just seemed a bit more roomy. I could put my legs up without hitting the table, turn in the bed easier and was very comfy. I think both seats have both their merits and drawbacks, and will suit different people depending on their requirements. It's certainly not the same a EK's A380 vs 777, I currently class EK's 777 experience as one of the worse business class experiences (yes even behind BA!), really struggled to get comfy, staff were slow and the QR experience was just so much better.

Out of interest how do they decide if/when to substitute planes from the 787 to the 777 or equivalent? Is it because the plane is quite empty or needed elsewhere across the network (or God forbid has a fault)? Do they often substitute planes flying from London? Sorry loads of questions and thank you...

CharlotteC there are a great number of reasons for aircraft changes.

The obvious one is faulty aircraft requiring substitution at short notice.

Another reason is capacity. If a cabin is sold out then another aircraft with a larger cabin may be substituted.
An example of this is PSA-DOH where an A319 has replaced the A320. The A319 has only 8 J seats whereas the A320 has 12. There are a number of flights where more than 8 J seats are already sold so the A320 has replaced the A319 for those flights.

QR still have a shortage of aircraft and swaps are frequent in order to service all routes fully.

Remember that all aircraft have to be taken out of service for a day or more regularly to undergo maintenance. Safety is after all a priority!

If say an A380 has to be taken out of service then it creates a chain of changes where aircraft taken from another destination have also to be replaced etc. You cannot replace an A380 with a narrow bodied A320 because of both capacity and range considerations.

Introduction of new routes always exacerbates the problems.

Another problem that most of us forget is crewing. Cockpit crew are trained and certified for specific aircraft and are not allowed to fly aircraft they are not certified for. Add to this Pilot flying hours restrictions and there is a whole new reason for aircraft swaps. To a much lesser extent the same is valid for cabin crew.

The above is as simple a description as I can give. I am sure that N1Rotate could give a much more detailed, and correct, reply. I look forward to reading it myself.
