Qantas to Remove Domestic Fuel Surcharges

As posted on AFF:

Qantas to Remove Domestic Fuel Surcharges

Qantas announced today it would remove its domestic fuel surcharges for tickets issued on or after Thursday 1 January 2009.

Executive General Manager, Mr John Borghetti, said the airline had reduced domestic and international twice in recent months.

"When we reduced surcharges last week, we said we would closely monitor the situation," Mr Borghetti said.

"We are responding today, with the removal of the $18 per sector fuel surcharge that applied to all Qantas domestic and QantasLink bookings.

No word yet on the points reduction for paying surcharges on award flights though, but would expect it to be substantial.

That was after reducing the surcharge from $21 to $18, not for the reduction from $18 to nothing!

So if a $3 reduction in charges = 500 points reduction
then a further $18 reduction in charges should = 3,000 point reduction?

Keep dreaming!

Interestingly, DJ have started to put the changes through on their website to their fares and it appears that, despite all their publicity about keeping the air fair, they haven't passed on the full $19 reduction to passengers. SYDMEL has only moved about $4 to $6 on average across the tariff.

Of course, if QF did this, it would make front page news ... DJ is another story as they get away with anything!

I should hope QF pass on all of their planned reductions to passengers.

Where did they say anything about reductions ? Removing fuel surcharges only means that all fuel costs will be contained in the base fare and could legitimately result in an actual increase in the total fare.

Personally I dont really care if base fares creep up a little - as long as fuel surcharges disappear.

Strange

If I attempt to book a one-way seat on same flight in Jan BNE-SYD

Classic is 8000 + $31.96 or 13500 all points

Anytime is 8000 + $48.65 or 12493 all points

Does this look like they have reduced surcharge?

Maybe website will be changed overnight

Although the YQ will seemingly go, it sounds like the YR charges will remain

Based on booking today , the "taxes" for a paid ticket on BNE-SYD would seem to come $36.05

YQ $18.35
YR $7.00
$10.70 in genuine taxes ( plus if issued in Australia, there would be GST to pay )

which comes out as $36.05

With the YQ removed it should drop back to $17.70. If QF also removed their other stealth profit raiser of YR, then would drop back to $10.70 ; taxes of a level how they used to be

Fortunately , for those connecting, YR seems to be $7.00 one way rather than per sector ; Let's wait and see what the system quotes once thursday comes

Does anyone know if they would be reducing (or eliminating) the fuel-related fare inflation for international sectors soon?

I suspect that they will reduce/eliminate them about 2 weeks after their competitors do

Just as an aside, I found an article justifying the introduction of fuel fines back in 2004. When fuel reached $44 a barrel and introduced , the surcharge was $6 for domestic sectors and $15 for international

Oil is now < $40 a barrel , yet the surcharge to London is $162

Doesn't seem fair, does it. It's almost become a way of increasing the fare 'by stealth'.

I'm hoping that they'd eliminate it before I have to pay for my MEL-LHR flight so that I can just ignore the $25 booking fee and re-book at the lower total. I guess there is a fat chance of that happening, so I shall keep dreaming.
