Experience with using credit?

Anyone had any experience with using the "12 months credit" you get for cancelling a non-refundable fare. The other night my better half spent the best part of an hour on the phone to QF whilst they tried to pay for a new booking with the credit (which must can only be accessed by a reference number - not even passenger name, apparently). Of course the QF agent on the phone line could not work out the fare refunded so we were told to call back in the morning. Of course the morning came round and the fare had gone up (from $260 to $350 - still in the same class - but the sale ended). After another hour or so they finally worked out the credit, but then had to work out what to do with the increased fare. In the end they decided to charge the full $350 and then charge back the difference to the credit card! Surely there must be a simpler way of accessing credit (eg Virgin Blue have a simple system where the $ amount is recorded) - rather than having to recalculate it when you want to use it.

I had some credit on hold and lost my ticket number when my OS decided it wasn't going to work and the only way to convince it to work was to format the HDD and reinstall it.

They were able to find my ticket number by doing a search on my CC number, and I then easily and quickly applied that credit to another booking.
