The seating config has not changed, no neither has the thinking. 3EF or 4EF are best for couples travelling together who want to sit together. If you are not on speaking terms, then 1A and 4K might be better options.

I would agree that the aisle is wider at row 3 than at row 2 or 4. That said, I think a couple would probably be OK choosing the row 2 window/center seat pairs (e.g., A/E, or F/K) as they're close enough for conversation. This would be recommended if one pax particularly likes a window seat (e.g., myself).
Another consideration is that there is no overhead storage above row 1 and the storage above row 2 is virtually inaccessible without stepping into the seating area of the pax in E or F, impossible if that passenger is sleeping and fully reclined.
