There has been a strong suspicion for quite a while that Qantas likes teasing new QP members with a random upgrade on a short flight.

Something about drug dealers giving away first samples for free?

Congrats anyways

I was under the impression the OP was talking about a points upgrade clearing, not an op-up.

Nope - X class is an award booking in WHY - and was then upgraded, so definitely an op-up.

Absolutely! Award bookings in WHY cannot be upgraded "using points" without ticket re-issue.

This has happened to Mrs Shano, mini-Shano and I. We were preallocated a bassinet position on a 767 when on an award flight, and were then op-up'd to J as apparently someone else in whY wanted a bassinet. The WP status no doubt helped.

I've had it twice on SYD-BNE, usually on a busy Friday night, but the sweetest was last month on the return from my DONE4. I had booked MEL-BNE in Y as I planned to take the final domestic sectors of the DONE from MEL later in the year.
Checked in, and was pleasantly surprised to get 2A, and the bonus was that the domestic point posted same day, getting me to WP before the CX flight from HKG-MEL even registered!

So there are some surprises out there!
