A380 layout
I read with horror the prospect of the A380 having 11 across in WHY. This being for a high density fitout.

I presume that QF wouldn't entertain the idea as I understand they are targetting 550 (or so) seats. But is anyone out there aware of the layout that QF will use? Will they take the opportunity to use Y+?

The A380 layout is a big secret, but QF seems to be keeping a very close eye on SQ and matching them. Originally QF did announce 550 seat as their A380 config, but this was changed to 505 after SQ came up with their new F (being rolled out to their 77W fleet). Lately QF has been making noise of "450 seats" but has not announced that, however the implication is that the first drop was to match the F/J product, and the next drop to 450 would be for a Y+ product. QF would be insane not to introduce Y+ on the A380s, so this is hardly a surprise or a big secret.

From memory EK will have three configurations, depending upon routes, that range for 490 to 614.
The problem with the A380 in high density configurations is the lack of underfloor baggage space. Fitting 800 people in it will mean a strict enforcement of 1 bag per passenger, or the airline will fly the other bags in a freighter behind it.

I very much doubt QF will introduce a Y+ product. They have clearly done their sums and worked out that they would lose more money by people downgrading than they would make by people uprading, or the product would already be there on the 747s.

I very much think they will.
There was an ASX presentation a few weeks ago mentioning a 4th class...
So unless we are getting a super 1st class, I think we are getting Y+
- Jetstar leather seats and Magda serving !!

Qantas says 501, in 3 class, but what do they know? http://www.qantas.com.au/info/about/company/A380text
In 2005 Dixon announced 501 pax config for A380 on the MEL-LAX route (as the "most pax on the longest route in the world (sic)"). Also announced were conference rooms and facilities for business meetings (I wonder if these have gone by the wayside?), and the following supplier list:
- Panasonic for the new entertainment system including full email, SMS and internet access
- B&B Italia on furniture detailing.
- First Class seating is being manufactured by BE Aerospace in the United States, as is Skybed, and the new Economy Class seats are being produced by Recaro

Awhile ago there were a number of comments regarding QF personnel reading this forum's content. I hope they still do........
If QF don't put Y+ on the 380s I will continue to do what I just completed this week. I purchased PER-SIN-LHR-Canada with the SIN-Canada legs being in BA WT+ (Well three of them were flown in WT+ - I enjoyed the YUL-LHR sgment somewhat more than the rest).
Ticketing based on SIN origin results in substantial savings. My PER TA was able to ticket the BA WT+ return ticket at SIN rates. SIN-PER-SIN is available on the QF Singapore website. Note: Only the LHR-SIN segment (a Wed) had an empty WT+ seat.
But then east coast NorthAmerica from PER is almost the same flight time whether you head east or west. And there was a rumor about JAL adding Y+. Hopefully SIN-NRT will be included. QF does eventually respond to competition. Even if only to maintain marketing image.
Happy wandering

I have thought about this also. On the LAX QF flights that I have taken some of the paxs look like they are taking every article of clothing that they own-five and six body size bags. With QF typically selling out every seat in peak times (the two previous Januarys that I have traveled to SYD there was not one seat open) where does all of this luggage go if the a/c is configured for 550+ paxs?

The A380 is weight limited, not volume limited. There is tons of space on the 3rd deck (just not much payload left); don't forget the 3rd deck is full length, so it is 50% of the pax decks' volume. Which is why the airlines have been talking about amenities on the 3rd deck that take up lots of space but don't weigh much (absurd ideas like a running track -- without showers). The cargo takes up only about half the space on the 3rd deck, leaving a lot of room for galleys and other things (casinos, bedrooms, gym, etc. have all been mentioned as part of the hype). For the short routes that high-density (800 pax) config A380 is likely to be used for, there could be 100kg+ of luggage per pax. The problem occurs when trading off range/fuel load, such as for the LAX-MEL flights.
