The rail DB travel planner (http://reiseauskunft.bahn.de/bin/query.exe/en?) is I believe one of the best trip organisers around, and allows you to buy and print your ticket from Aust. Add to that some of the best trains in the world, and you have a fast and comfortable way to get around Germany and even further abroad.

I know, and I have used them many times. But I know many people who would love the comfort of a QF ticket even when it will cost them extra.

Sure. But there are quite cheap domestic flights within Germany and Europe as well. www.lufthansa.de now allows to book oneways on the cheap fares, so you may combine rail and airtravel. The competitor is www.airberlin.de, which is a new merger of the old d-BA and airberlin. Since last year it is very easy to combine what you like.

Be careful: when book on LH: Chose an EU country as residency, or you will pay a fortune! Book without logging in. With electronic ticket and creditcard a propper adress is not needed.

If you travel more on thrains you may consider buying a "BahnCard" which offers 25% or 50% discount.

May I come back to the initial question of this thread?

Does 1000 minimum miles apply to these? And is it possible to book it separately or only in conjunction with QF flight?

Does anybody have a clue about the fare?

I was going to in October but my plans changed yesterday. The interesting news was that QF was willing to ticket the train as part of a DONE4! Which is of course not within the fare rules but they would have allowed me to do this anyway.
So unfortunately I will not be able to report back in October.

According to the QF Booking Engine, No points are earned. Also as mentioned in a previous post, it can only be booked as part of a QF end-to-end ticket.

And they would charge you a fuel surcharge for that "sector" as well! So QF would get the sector revenue (since its a QF "flight" number) and the fuel fine, which would likely well cover the actual cost of the train fare.

For only AUD 140 first class, the train trip from Frankfurt to Cologne is a great way to experience "low flying" in comfort - still one of the fastest trains in Europe.
