Qantas have no trouble selling at full price bus class Aust - USA. Can be hard to get a paid seat. So getting a discounted bus class seat in near impossible. Circle pacific fares can be cheaper than LAX-MEL-LAX direct flights

I agree with the above suggestion. If you can keep your trip to 22,000 miles and can manage to come back through Asia on Cathay Pacific, you can get a business class Circle Pacific for $4900, which is a lot cheaper than the QF round-trip fare LAX-MEL. Also a great way to accumulate some miles and tier points (for us BA flyers). ^
