2-class QF B747-400s

Any thoughts on the best business class seats on QF's 2-class 747-400s? Upperdeck still the best?

The seats in Zone A have the A330 style seats
The other J seats have standard 744 seats

The upper deck seats are exactly the same as the other non zone A seats.

Personally I see no great thrill in sitting upstairs. Depending on where you are flying to would vary where I think is better ; if going to a destination where door 1L is used to disembark, then sit downstairs for quickest disembarkation ; if door 2L is going to be used, then sit upstairs for quickest disembarkation

For best chance of an empty seat adjacent, take a seat downstairs on a centre aisle

I agree downstairs in J is best. I always find upstairs to be full and downstairs to be less full, meaning quicker service. For novelty if you are on 2 class I always try for front rows as it tends to have less foot traffic

It's the pure joy of turning left!

Actually, the front row gets a better forward view and the flight deck crew know they have added protection in case they can't stop at the terminal.

I believe the skybeds in the A330's and Zone A of the 744's are somewhat narrower and do not have the storage spaces ("Glovebox" and "A4/Folio Storage")under the 'inner' arm rest.)

Click here: International Business, then select the "On Board" Tab, "Skybed" and "Other Features" for more information.

tnikybelle,

Yes you are right in assuming that; this thread is about the 2 class 744's.

Normally Qantas schedule 743's for the SYD-HNL route, although they sometimes have to substitute a 744 which is a real bonus for those travelling in J.

At the moment,QF 743's only have the dreamtime seats ("old situp seats").

Rows 1-4 are in Zone A ( Main Deck )
Rows 23-24 are in Zone B ( Main Deck )
Rows 11-18 are in Zone F ( Upper Deck )

Personally, ( if I wasn't able to get the exit in row 16) I would go for rows 23 or 24 and if you want the best chance of an empty seat adjacent, then go for D or F and hope for E to remain empty

If you look at the seat maps on the QF website you can see where the zones are

Dave

Thanks for the last reply

Out of curiosity, do you know if AKL uses 1L or 2L??

As in this seat map, zone A is Business Class on the 2 Class 744's.

Not for the passenger, the actual seating area is the same. The arm rests are slightly narrower; enough so the storage has been left out; not a huge loss really.

The A330 version of the Skybed seats are no narrower than the original 744 version as far as the seat itself if concerned. The seat cushions are the same. The only difference is in the width of the centre arm rest between the pair of seats. This centre arm rest section does not have the document holder section and as such is about 2 inches narrower than with the Skybeds on the upper-deck and lower-deck zone B seats.

In my experience and in my opinion, this is a very minor difference and has minimal affect on the seat comfort. I would not use this difference to make my seat location selection. Other factors have more significance in my opinion, such as personal preference for upper or lower deck and the experience of turning left when entering the aircraft.
