Multiple classes on one booking?

Is there a way to book online for a flight to AU from LHR for example economy going out and PE coming back? I can't figure it out but thought someone here might have a trick?

Booking two one way flights separately obviously only offers highly inflated prices.

Sometimes 2 one-way tickets are cheaper, it varies by route (for example SYD-AKL-SYD is always cheaper when bought separately, at least for J fares). Most web sites don't allow specifying different class on different sectors, but a few do. Easiest way is to use a travel agent and for mixed class bookings they usually have access to lower fares (typically 5-10% lower). If you have an Amex card there could be other benefits in using Amex travel to buy tickets, offseting their fee.

Thanks! Will check out with a travel agent. BA do it on their website, just wish QF would do it for Y, they do it for higher classes!

I tried to do this recently for a SYD-SIN-SYD with Y over and J back, and was unable even with a travel agent. They can pop it on the same PNR but the pricing still returns the same as booking two one-way tickets. If you find a way to do this on QF, please let us know!

I'm planning to book MNL-MEL-SYD-MNL on J. Would it be cheaper if I just book MNL-SYD-MNL return, then book a separate SYD-MEL-SYD? Since QF has MNL-MEL flight.

If I do this (separate bookings for international and domestic), can I check through my baggages to MEL?

the QF site should allow you to book it as long if there are T fares for sale. Otherwise its better to call up QF resv to price a multiple class itinerary.

You would need to call QF or use a TA. However often discount Y fares cannot be combined with higher class fares on a half return basis. From a quick search on ITA Matrix it looks like a return PE fare is cheaper than Y one way PE the other.

I would suggest booking MNL-MEL//SYD-MNL return, and book a MEL-SYD one way.

QF does not have a MNL-MEL flight. You would need to go via SYD. MNL/MEL fares do allow a stop in SYD so you would actually be better having the entire lot of flights in one ticket.

You will also avoid paying UO tax (Australian goods and services tax) on the domestic.

-------

QF do not allow combining any Y and J fare together. However, you can combine any J with any F, and any Y with any W on a half return basis. Only those two combinations are permitted.

Looking at the fare rules for LHR-SYD, there is nothing listed that indicates that this is not permitted. Doing a check on ITA , outbound S and inbound T prices up quite happily

Subject to availability, I cannot see that there should be any problem making the booking over the phone with QF or with a travel agent

The other thing you may wish to consider is flying biz class return to Asia (see the premium fare deals thread here on FT - some cracking deals ATM), and then pick up a round-trip economy or premium economy Asia-Australia. Might provide you with more overall comfort for a cheaper price.

The QF website will book Y and PEY together if there is availability (likely T class only). The "rules" as to what Y classes are permitted is rather opaque since some selections will "gray out" certain other classes. The main culprits in my case seem to be routing PER-HKG ( and north) via eastern Australia seems to limited to one way and the really discount fares can not be combined with the fully flex returns (seemingly at random)

There is an urban myth (though perhaps true) that economy and business/first fare classes can not be combined on a half return basis. Certainly there is no way to accomplish this on the QF web site.

It would be "nice" if QF would "please explain" but I can't see that happening in the present environment...

But I'm again wandering

That the website may not be set up to handle it, does not mean that it is not possible to price up a r/t combining an economy class one way and a premium economy the other

What cannot generally be done ( price effectively ) is to part of a one way journey in a higher cabin. e.g. economy to Hong Kong and then business to Australia

Yes the routing would be MNL-SYD-MEL but my point was to book a MNL-MEL fare would likely be cheaper than a separate domestic booking.

QF does have some fares that allow discount J to be combined with discount Y. For example: https://matrix.itasoftware.com/#view...NKlgxsRomIK001

However some (perhaps most) cannot, although it is not an 'urban myth' or something that cannot be explained. It can easily be determined by looking at the Combinability section of the fare rules. For example the following is found in a QF discount J fare:

Code:
PROVIDED -
COMBINATIONS ARE WITH ANY FARE FOR CARRIER JQ IN ANY
     RULE AND TARIFF.
COMBINATIONS ARE WITH ANY BUSINESS RESTRICTED/BUSINESS
     UNRESTRICTED/BUSINESS EXCURSION/FIRST CLASS EXCURSION/
     FIRST CLASS RESTRICTED/FIRST CLASS UNRESTRICTED-TYPE
FARES FOR CARRIER QF BETWEEN AUSTRALIA/EUROPE IN ANY
     RULE AND TARIFF.
COMBINATIONS ARE WITH ANY BUSINESS RESTRICTED/BUSINESS
     EXCURSION/BUSINESS UNRESTRICTED/FIRST CLASS RESTRICTED/
FIRST CLASS EXCURSION-TYPE FARES FOR CARRIER EK BETWEEN
AUSTRALIA/EUROPE IN ANY RULE AND TARIFF.

The OP is looking for fares ex UK to AU ( plus economy and premium economy) and for that the fare rules for classes O,T,I and A ( as exmples of lowest fares per class ) have no such restriction

Indeed there can be restrictions , if the carrier imposes them in the rules, but for the OP's issue, it seems to just be that may need to pick up the phone and make the booking if the website is not set up for such a purchase

Interestingly I was just looking at a trip for December and am being shown "PE Sale" when searching economy. I was able to select Q-Deal Y outbound + PE on return. They can do it when they want to!
