QF vs EK Y: no comparison

I flew EK Y to MEL and returned QF1 (ex SYD). Qantas are quite the disappointment in comparison.

Emirates: hot towels, nicer printed menus, proper meals (entree, main, desert, cheese, chocolate), better organised crew, always serve drinks on a tray, slightly bigger seat pitch, real cutlery, nicer cabin, amenity kit by default

First and last time with Qantas. QF1 is their "flagship" flight?

I agree that Emirates is better than Qantas

Flight QF1 to London is no different than any other service and wouldn't expect it to be better or worse than any other service

Figures from SeatGuru:

EK in the 77W 32" pitch and 17" width (10 across).
EK in the 380 32-34" pitch and 18" width (10 across)
QF in the 380 31" pitch and 17.5" width. (10 across)

I think you have proven that the thread title is inaccurate by providing a comparison

I'm actually quoting data points. It's up to others to make the consideration of these data and making the comparison.

I've flown both EK and QF 380's regularly, yes some things are better with EK, but not enough to make me choose one over the other.

And also shows why SeatGuru is not necessarily to be believed.

A380 main cabin is 21'5" wide, 777 19'3" - difference of 2'2" = 26inches -- so its going to be 2" per seat differential unless aisles are superwide...

Would also think that QF and EK width in Y needs to be the same (QF certainly don't have superwide aisles).

And never been able to find those 34" EK Y seats... seatmaps looks the same, and no guide I have ever read has pointed out special rows (save for the seats with missing seats in front and bulkheads)

On the whole both appear to have a pretty decent Y product, albeit EK generally wins on the IFE front.

I don't see any reason why EK and QF economy seats must be the same width

I have been on EK 777s where the economy cabin has been 34" pitch

I think that EK's 777 aisles are distinctly on the narrow side, so those numbers are far from unrealistic.

All flights were A380s (first time. Nice planes!)

Also forgot Emirates provide power at seats and very cheap wifi. Qantas seats however were a bit more comfortable.

I know it's economy, and this is a forum of frequent flyers, and at the end of the day, there's not a huge amount amount of variance...but with so much cost-cutting across many airlines, it's just nice to see one not gone that way (yet?).

QF1 is definitely the last ever long-haul I'll do without a stopover. Done that 3 times now to Australia...never again

Nice you got the 380. I wonder will your experience on EK 777 be any different when you lose one (more than one imho) inch of width and two inches of pitch?

Half of the services to Australia are A380s ( 75% of non stop services are A380s )

BNE : Non stop service is 380 , 1 stop service is 777
SYD : 2 x A380 non stop 380s, 1 x 777 1 stop service
MEL : 2 x A380 non stop 380s, 2 x 777 1 stop services
PER : 1 x A380 non stop 380 , 2 x 777 non stop services

Not hard to find a 380 service and ( excluding Perth ) assured for non stop services to Dubai

Pretty sure MEL only has EK407 to DXB as an A380. The 77W services go via KUL and SIN.

+ ADL 1x 777 non stop

In response to the OP. I recently flew QF SYD-DXB and EK DXB-SYD. Some aspects of the flight was better on EK, but some were better on QF.

Had the worst check-in experience i have ever had at DXB with EK. Once we were onboard the service was no better. My seat (which had been chosen about 6 months prior) had been allocated to myself and another person, and with a 100% full flight (at least in Y), i was separated from my travelling partner and put in a middle seat. No apology, compensation or anything - the FA just kept repeating 'its not my fault, i dont have anything to do with seat selections'. Overall, the service was slow, clumsy and the FAs were surly and have the impression that they didnt want to be there.
QF service was much better, FAs were friendly and helpful and whilst QF lacked some of the small touches, based on service alone, in the future i would choose QF over EK.
