Qantas to Partner with WestJet on Canadian Flights

Starting on October 15, Qantas passengers on flights to LAX...

will be able to continue their journey to Vancouver, Calgary and Edmonton with WestJet, on top of the existing codeshares with Alaska Airlines and American Airlines to Vancouver and Toronto.
WestJet offers 20 one-stop flights to other Canadian cities from those 5 cities.

Qantas frequent flyer program members will be able to earn points and status credits on WestJet codeshare flights carrying a Qantas flight number.

It's better than nothing, but an AC to AC connection through YVR sounds more attractive than a LAX connection to get on QF.

AC service may not be as attractive if travelling to/from MEL or BNE.

So what's wrong with a SYD international to domestic connection in peak hours after a 24 hr trip ?

One less stop:

AC: YEG/YYC-YVR-SYD-MEL/BNE
QF: YEG/YYC-LAX-MEL/BNE

In most Canadian airports you clear US customs before departure. So connecting in the US is not an issue.

I've had more issues connecting in Australia, then in the US. But I'm sure everyone's journey is different.

International-International connections in Australia ( and most countries ) is simple; just go through security and continiue on to next flight

US has the awful system of having to clear immigration, collect baggage, clear customs and then drop the bags off again before then heading round to the departures level and clearing security

I cannot think of many places that are worse for connecting than the USA for international connections

In the context of these discussion though, not too many would to international-international connections. Most would be doing dom/intl connections and vice versa, which are similar procedures in both US & Australia (and many other countries).

So someone travelling from MEL-DFW would have the easiest connections doing MEL-SYD-DFW/DFW-LAX-MEL (putting aside in flight product ) In terms of this thread, someone travelling MEL-YYC would on balance be better off doing MEL-LAX-YYC than doing MEL-SYD-YVR-YYC, as it is only one connection, not two. From SYD it would seem though SYD-YYC is easier via YVR than LAX with the requirement to pass through US immigration as you point out.
