Requalification Options
My requal date is 29th Feb and I'm about 160 points short of making Platinum again this year - too much flying on SQ and AF, not that AF compete on many of QFs routes.
Anyway, maybe some of you can give me some advice on my thoughts / options;
1. I will earn >300 points over the wknd of 3rd/4th March. What are the chances of sweet talking Qantas into giving me an extension to my requal date?
2. If I don't submit flights that will contribute to my status prior to my requal date, that are actually taken prior, and then submit them after, will they count to this year or next year? Do they go on the year they were earned or the year that they are credited to my account? Effectively carrying a number over from this year, as I've already made Gold and it will mean I will qualify almost straight away for Gold again next year.

2) They count towards the year of flight not credit so that will not work.
However QF has been known in the past to comp another year of WP so you may get the lucky renewal pack.

1) If you are currently gold, the chance is low enough that I wouldn't be even calling; I have not heard of people getting extra time to attain a new status.
2) as said already, they will be credited to the year in which the flight was flown , not the new year so you will be 300 of the 600 towards renewal

QFF are very up with this and even document it in your activity:
Code:
Date Description Base Cabin Status Total Status
points bonus bonus points credits
01 OCT 11 QF 008 ECONOMY 29SEP11 DALLAS 8,311 - 8,311 16,622 45
FORT WORTH/BRISBANE
...
Status credits for this flight are not included in the current year total
Eligible flight (Qantas, QantasLink or Jetstar segment) counted towards status attain/retain.

Prior to changing your status, QF seem to also look at any future travel with them. If you have multiple future sectors already in your bookings on your profile it could help.
You could also call them & argue that you intended to travel with them, but due to the inductrial action and fleet grounding, you had to book with an alternative carrier.
I would have though that QF would take a lenient view as they need as many real frequent flyers as they can get at the moment.
Otherwise, you may need to travel to NZ & back in J in the next few days.... IMHO J on a QF 737 isn't that good but may be worth the requal.

If this was in relation to a renewal I would agree but for attaining status initially, I would not expect them to perform a promotion when short

IME from last year, NOT previous years, QF sent me a WP renewal pack after my membership year saying that even though I have not requalified....I did but my JQ and LA flights did not credit and it took two weeks for QF to manually credit them
I should requalify with 2 months to spare this year.
To the OP I think QF will renew you even if you are short, it does depend on how long you have been a WP and what your QF flying was like during the year.

I read it that the OP is currently gold and is 160 points short of initial qualification for platinum
I do not think that QF will provide a promotion to Platinum but instead the 300 points earned will simply have to be used as part of the next years tally to either renew gold or attain platinum
If I have misread and he is currently platinum, then I would wait and see whether QFF chooses to requalify despite not making the target

From my reading the OP is WP, the post could be construed as missing qualifying for WP but the OP profiles says QF Platinum. They have already qualified for gold, I guess that means 4 qualifying sectors as there is a soft landing to SG.
If QF was to try to prompt a promo to the OP either one off SC for a new flight on QF or a double SC offer, both of which I have previously been sent to help me requalify, QF would have sent to with a few months to spare.
I cannot guarantee it but I feel QF may comp the renewal and the OP will find out in a couple of weeks into the new membership year.

To answer some of the other questions;
I'm currently in Europe, so a status run to NZ is out of the option - besides, I'm not really into flying for the sake of flying and can't understand people that do. Maybe I just do too much! I'm going to see a friend a couple of hours away for the weekend, this will get me 120 points and with some luck qantas will look favourably on my closeness to missing out.
I have done very few flights (6?) with QF this year, to be honest, I don't really like them and when there are other far better airlines plying the same routes as QF, why would I take QF....
So, hopefully, as a number of you have suggested here they will be kind enough to requalify me despite me missing out. Unless they happen to read my real thoughts on QF, of course.....

If the OP has not the letter/email saying QF will comp him another year he will not get it now. QF comped me once as Plat, when I was some SC short of Plat re-qualifying, about 6 weeks before my year end.

Last time I was requalified automatically I didnt receive any letter confirming it; the re-assessment date was just updated
