Media beat up, as usual.
Qantas deals with a problem and it is headline news

As much as it sounds like Qantas handled things well their maintenance track record is becoming more and more curious. Maybe they need to retrain their engine people or maybe these planes are all coming of age for a proper overall. But nothing can be questioned about their appropriate handling of all these situations.

Maybe it has more to do with media interest in QF problems. Some years ago the media just didn't report any of this. Combine it with a "slow news day" and you make a managed tech problem into a the averting of a major disaster only through the sheer skill of the dedicated and well trained crew. Perhaps the next news story will calculate the distance the crippled plane was from the nearest school....

Over the past few days there has been:
A tail strike
Engine fire causing the aircraft to veer of the runway
A bird strike with Virgin Blue
A pilot incapacitated with Air France
A loss of cabin pressure with TAROM
2 diversions of the same flight with Cathay Pacific
just to name a few. Now some of those things are far more serious than a "valve problem" yet haven't made a peep in the news, because it isn't Qantas.

Nobody needs retraining - Qantas has some the finest engineers in the world, that wouldn't dare put an aircraft into service unless it was safe.
No they are not. They are reporting Qantas complications.

Exactly what I think. There are two millionaires' owned yachts moored in Hobart today and the Mercury (for those who do not know the one and only newspaper here and on top of it owned by News Limited) claims that Hobart is becoming new French Riviera...
