Lifetime Status Credits ending in "1" - why?

There were distances which gave ending with 8 and some ending with 5. As such any final digit is possible

5
8
8+5 => 3
8+8 => 6
8+8+5=> 1
8+8+8 => 4
8+8+8+5 => 9
8+8+8+8 => 2
8+8+8+8+5=> 7
