ITA/AeroMexico MAD-MEX OW 718 USD July-Feb
Similar to the $900 FCO-MEX last year.

This is ITA Business MAD-FCO, and then AeroMexico Premier One (Business) FCO-MEX. $718 on several dates july until Feb. FCO-MEX is on the older 787-8 with 2-2-2 but looks like you can route through AMS or CDG for the newer -9 with 1-2-1 for about $900.
MAD-FCO-MEX would earn 2157 MQDs for 3 MQD per $!!
Can add connecting flight to TIJ (and walk to San Diego) for a total of around $1000

be very CAREFUL when buying mixed ita/AM
because DELTA din't want to give me the MQD (approx 1800 MQD and 20k miles) for AMS-MEX because it was a 075-(klm) ticket and the AM leg was without the KL codeshare
So they say it won't earn because paid to KLM and operated(marketed AM.
In pnr.sh it showed the first leg as KL/KL , the second AM/AM
So try to find an itinerary which have AM code also for the first flight. or AZ code for the second
it was NAP-AMS-MEX premiere one flex refundable paid 950 euro approx

I saw that, sorry that happened!
I did a similar trip last year, FCO-AMS-MEX-TIJ all with AM flight numbers, issued on AM site with FCO-AMS being KLM operated. I had no issues getting it credited to DL so it might have to do with your ticket being KL issued. Basically I wouldn't be worried if booking directly with AM
