It seems recently that when QR have a "big sale" (like this Black Friday or the Travel Festival), the fares are pretty average by QR standards. But when it's a low key/virtually unpublicised event the sale seems better!

Possibly something to do with country specific sales and Doha head office initiated sales?

ARN/OSL aren't the easiest to position to
Really? ARN at least is very easy from where you are!

As someone living in CDG who occasionally re-positions for a good long haul deal., it is my experience that CDG has higher airfares than those places you mention. for those five cities you mention (plus one you didn't, BRU), I'd rank them as this for finding good long haul deals:

1) OSL
2) ARN
3) CPH
big gap
4) BRU
5) AMS
another gap, not quite as big
6) CDG

Thanks . I've seen good flights in CPH and ARN but never thought of OSL. I'll have to check the AMS-OSL flights and take it into account then!

CDG rarely comes up on the radar for good J deals; neither does AMS.

My next two US trips are in J; the first, from OSL, costs €738; the second, from AMS, costs €1144

For the routes I fly, about 6.3. Usually more expensive than CDG, but not always.

MAD and BCN would slot in as just slightly cheaper than BRU on that list.

Premium cabins ex MAD and BCN, in the past, were sometimes cheaper but now are always among the most expensive origins ex Europe. Last summer we ended up flying ex-BRU to Jakarta that was 40% cheaper than ex-BCN.

Interesting. During the summer, my travels were Trans-Atlantic, where BCN was about 20% cheaper than BRU and 35% cheaper than CDG.

The real deals for Europe-Asia last year were the Alitalia deals ex-FLR.

Hi SEA-Flyer,

Trans-Atlantic, and in summer, could very well be.

To Asia, on QR, ex BCN, since the sale in January 2016 we have not had anything really good.
Flying to BRU, CAI or Italy next January(F deals on LX) is an extra headache but the price difference justifies it for us.

QR and Alitalia, IMHO, are not on the same league.

Kindly PM when you find a good Trans-Atlantic deal. Thanks

Agreed regarding QR and Alitalia - that particular deal allowed you to fly on almost any carrier you wanted to: I know people who flew on AF, KL, CX, EK, EY, JL, NH, etc.
