Wow tough crowd here... Yes it's a good deal for a quality carrier on this route as far as I'm aware, and people who care about the route should be glad to be notified about this. 2-3k lower than usual is worth a post if it's not a regular occurrence. None of the haters defined "good" fares or referred to recent deals where these "good" fares actually existed.
Note that right now Qantas etc. offer AUD6k fares without the need for companion, which is also quite good.

I had a ripper from my travel agent - AUD$7300 RTW with the main stops NYC, DC, London, Paris, Poland and an Asian country. When I consider a NYC trip direct from SYD can be more than this I thought $7300 was fabulous.
Thanks for kind comments. Folks who wouldn't spend $5000 x 2 on airfares do jump on you. I do spend 10k plus on tickets and if I can save a few thousand hell yeah I'd like to do that.
