OCTOBER 2016 UPDATE
LAX-JFK TRANSCONTINENTAL FLIGHTS:
1. Same day turns possible on the E-jets and morning 738s.
2. Bonuses now based on fare paid.
3. As of OCTOBER 2016, best fares are now around $1000. Fare tends to rise a few hundred for 2 pax. Fares can also occasionally rise for no discernible reason, but the price spikes have thus far proven to be temporary. Fares have the trend to drop during the year. Keep checking for fares in the $700-$800 ranges for best possible pricing.
4. Airport hotels with shuttles - Crowne Plaza Panama Airport & Riande Aeropuerto. The CP is slightly closer; the Riande is slightly nicer. The CP shuttle leaves the hotel every :00 and :30 and runs 24 hours but they seem to leave a few minutes early as it had left when I went down at 4:00AM on the dot. Also, note UberX charges a US$14 surcharge on top of the ~US$2 fare. CP has poor sound isolation, I could hear my neighbors on both sides including talking, crying baby etc. Had to wear earplugs to sleep.

NOTE: LAX-JFK NO LONGER VALID FOR LOWEST FARES (effective OCT 2016)
If you want the transcon bonus, enter the search with a connection in JFK. (e.g. LAX-JFK,JFK-MIA,MIA-PTY,PTY-JFK,JFK-SFO.) You can play around from there to get the best deal. Some of the better deals do not start and end in the same city (e.g. start in LAX, end in SFO may be cheaper than start/end in LAX).
Also, it's possible on the outbound portion to time it so you have no more than a 60-minute layover at JFK or MIA (though note that some of these flights aren't available on weekends). While yes, JFK is notorious for delays, this rarely applies for inbound red-eye flights. Also, note that AA 28 below is sometimes "hidden" if you're looking on Google Flights inside a much more expensive trip; that does not necessarily mean, however, that you can't get it for one of the trips under $1,000 (in other words, try it out to see).

Recent fare rule inclusions, effective October 2016, now prevent any routing via JFK on the non-stop transcontinental A321T aircraft. = When trying to gain oneworld J / QF F access based on status, it is simply departing/connecting/arriving at any point on same ticket to and from an eligible international destination. PTY is eligible and not excluded regardless of length.
= When trying to gain oneworld J / QF F access based on class of service disregarding status, it is the international long haul clause that applies. Therefore, no "oneworld/QF lounge" access for non-elites for trips to and from PTY unless booking transcons since PTY is under 5 hours. Long time reader, first time poster. This awesome opportunity and all the really useful tips & info on this thread made me bite the bullet and buy my first mileage run!
My routing is LAX-JFK-MIA-PTY-MIA-JFK-LAX. I was lucky enough to get bumped to A on JFK-LAX, which I can't wait for!
Does anyone have advice on how to learn of over sell voucher opportunities? I'd prefer to spend most of my time at the lounge rather than at the gate hoping for a voucher opportunity. That being said, I have tons of flexibility, and would absolutely love the subsidy for a future trip

My entire return leg is on a Monday (PTY dep. 7am, LAX arriv. 9:30pm), which I'm hoping will increase the likelihood of overbookings (business travelers?).
Is directly asking a lounge agent if the flight is overbooked an option? Do I risk getting placed back in Business on JFK-LAX if I take a voucher on any of the legs?

but I'm a little confused: how'd you get it in the first place? Were you bumped out of J on another transcon? In any event, your best bet by far for at least guesstimating potential oversell opportunities in advance is on ExpertFlyer.com. You need at least a basic subscription for the site, but it's only five bucks a month and well worth it!Case in point: I just pulled up the seat buckets for all JFK-LAX AA transcons on 7/25. Based on personal experience, I know that the two latest flights of the day are generally the least booked ahead of time, though obviously they often end up filled to capacity if JFK/EWR have delays due to wind or inclement weather. However, right now the final flight of the day (AA 185, landing at LAX at 12:09am) is showing the following availability:
F7 A7 P7 Z0 J7 D7 I6 Y7 B0 H7 K7 M7 L7 W7 V7 G3 S0 N0 Q0 O0
Just to "decode" this for you: the three pertinent fare buckets are F, J and Y, which as most FTers know refers to first, business and coach. Since all three buckets are listed as "7", that means there's plenty of availability in all three cabins. (And no, you shouldn't take any of these numbers literally. What they actually mean is more like "7+": there are at minimum seven unsold seats in each section. Since A on the transcons only has 10 seats total, it's either empty or nearly so.)
Since the most popular flights on this route depart between roughly 12pm-5pm, I'll talk about the bucket below (for AA 3, arriving at 3:45pm):
F1 A1 P0 Z0 J1 D1 I0 Y7 B0 H7 K7 M7 L7 W0 V0 G0 S0 N0 Q0 O0
So: this one's already booked nearly to capacity in F and J, which is admittedly a bit unusual (F isn't usually this full ten days in advance). Your odds of an upgrade in this type of instance are pretty much zilch. Finally, here's my third example (AA 255, arriving at 1:07pm):
F5 A5 P3 Z0 J1 D1 I0 Y7 B0 H7 K7 M7 L7 W4 V0 G0 S0 N0 Q0 O0
Even this far out, there's only one seat available in J, so the odds of it being oversold are reasonably high. Moreover, half of F is empty, so they could very well upgrade some Js if the cabin doesn't get much fuller. Further, this flight has the best odds of this scenario happening than any other that day. That said, even the flight you're on (albeit presumably not on this particular day) has better odds than most:
F3 A3 P1 J1 D1 I0 Y7 B0 H7 K7 M7 L7 W7 V2 G0 S0 N0 Q0 O0
Again, only one seat in J but three in F.
In any event, it'd be a good idea to be at the gate by an hour or so before scheduled departure. Also, you can check both standby lists and seat maps on AA's phone app. While seat maps are never a definitive means of determining availability -- ExpertFlyer is the best, at least up until a few hours before departure -- if A is full and has a list of standby pax (and you're not one of them), it's safe to assume you're not getting upgraded.
