LETTER TO THE EDITOR
Respect TSA

Amber Jordan, Fairbanks
Published Monday, August 31, 2009

To the editor:

At age 28, Im still probably considered one of those young, idealistic types. But there are times in life when idealism is important. Like Sept. 11 anniversaries.

As a frequent airline passenger, I, too, sometimes feel inconvenienced by the extensive security measures required to get into the gate areas shoes off, jackets off, no liquids or gels exceeding 3 ounces. It seems like a daunting routine, especially for frequent fliers.

But I remember. Vividly. I was 20 years old on Sept. 11, 2001 plenty old enough to internalize the raw emotion of that tragic day and those that ensued. Now, as we approach another sad anniversary, I have become increasingly appalled at the number of individuals people my age, and older who throw child-like tantrums at Transportation Security Administration checkpoints when asked to complete a simple task like removing their shoes and jackets.

Do we really forget so easily? Or is that just my young idealism showing? Nearly 3,000 people died to get us to this point. Thats 3,000 lives that might have been saved if our security measures had been as tight on Sept. 11 as they are today. Thats 3,000 families that might not have been shattered by devastation and loss. But hindsight is always 20/20, and thats the clarity with which I view the current TSA screening measures.

My request to my fellow airline passengers is the same. Please see this situation clearly, for what it is: a slight annoyance that 3,000 souls would happily have endured, had it meant they could stay on the Earth with their children, parents, grandparents, and friends. No, they werent all airline passengers on Sept. 11, but I bet they would have proudly taken off their jackets and shoes on their next airline flight had they lived to take one.

So please, the next time you consider shouting at the TSA agents because you want to keep on your stylish blue designer vest. Remember those 3,000 people, and find take some pride in our nations history, resilience and dedication to national security. And dont ever forget.

Respect is earned, not given. Until TSA management stops the existing common practice of TSO's conducting unconstitutional administrative searches, and until they abandon their existing ineffective security theater, I don't see the likelihood of increased respect anytime soon.

I'll second that.

Geez that persons close to my age, and seems to have drank alittle to much of the koolaid. I also seriously doubt the FF status based on there commentsabout restrictions. Everyone knows it was the new cockpit doors and other airline policies not tsa lunacy that put a end to any way of taking over a aircraft agian.

Sorry but it not gonna happen anytime soon. TSA brought this upon themselves and deserve all of the Ill will, comments, and bad treatment from the general public. Don't dish it if you can't take it as your gonna get back 10times what you gave out.

Blogger Bob is now pretending to be a girl named Amber sending letters to the editor?

That was honestly the most ridiculous thing I've read in ages. I guess some people are going to spend their entire lives trapped in a '9/11 changed everything and life will never be the same again' loop (like most UA FAs). Very sad they cannot grow up and move on.

It was a tragedy for sure - but I wonder how Amber feels about the millions who died since that fateful day from car crashes, violent crimes, and preventable diseases. Are these other tragedies not as worthy of a coordinated response?

I wonder if people like Amber would permit the government to install speed and control regulators on their cars to prevent accidents and pass laws about what we can and cannot eat for our own safety. You can't be too careful, right?

While TSA's plan seems to be just that, purchase respect with uniforms and badges, it is clear to all that the plan is invalid and won't work.

As already stated, respect is earned.

TSA has a lot of work to do if they want to earn the wages that will pay for respect.

How hard did the TSA have to search to find Ms. Amber and how much did they pay her?

As previously stated. RESPECT IS EARNED. Never been fond of those mall cops. Stop the ID and gate checks, don't destroy my CLEAR card, and rethink some of the nonsense.... Then we will chat.

Comment of the day....

Sigilistic 8/31/2009, 5:51 p.m.
Conversely, it would be GREAT if we could get some more competent people actually working for TSA.

I saw that letter to the editor in my Google news feed this morning, but there’s a link to it on the front page of the TSA site? From a sheeple writing to some dinky newspaper in Alaska? Seriously?

Homer: Oh, how does it work?
Lisa: It doesn't work.
Homer: Uh-huh.
Lisa: It's just a stupid rock.
Homer: Uh-huh.
Lisa: But I don't see any tigers around, do you?
Homer: ...Lisa, I want to buy your rock.

Okay, let's all stop for a moment to give TSA the respect they deserve. 1e-85 seconds later everyone goes back to work.

I read the comments and wasn't really surprised. A couple folks supporting TSA (in the minority), many more complaining about TSA, and a very small minority blaming Bush and one conspiracy nut makes for a typical view of Americans on this issue.
