Austin to Albuquerque?

I am driving to Albuquerque for summer to visit a friend who attends UNM. I am hispanic, therefore, every time there is a checkpoint (Went down to Corpus Christi), they always send me to secondary, and basically waste about an hour with all these questions even though I PRODUCED VALID License.

Is there many border patrol checkpoint in or en route to Albuquerque in I-40? If there is more than 2, I would be better off flying, save me time and agitation.

I have traveled on I-40 many times between St. Louis and LA. There are no La Migra checkpoints.

I am not hispanic, but I despise La Migra as much as you do. They actually told me once at one of their checkpoints that if I do not have my passport with me, they could detain me indefinitely, even though I am a US Citizen . Reason? I have a foreign accent.

Perhaps you should carry a proof of your legal status, even though you are not required to. It may save you a lot of time.

I have driven from Austin to Albuquerque before and can attest to the fact their are no checkpoints of any kind via the "north" routing up to Amarillo and over or the "middle" routing up to Abilene, lubbock and over to ABQ via 84 (which is the shortest mileage wise). The "south" routing via El Paso and Las Cruses up to ABQ will run you by the checkpoint east of El Paso on your way home and there was a mobile on I-40 at one point Northbound, not sure if it still there.

Ciao,
FH

I have not seen a single checkpoint on I-40, and I travel this route quite often.

When was the last time yall have traveled on I-40? Going to New Mexico next week, applied for expedited service for passport, but due to summer, doesnt looks like I will get it any time soon . I guess it would be a nice night spent with the friendly officers of BP threatening me to charge with some bogus charges.

I meant to type I-25 not I-40 going north from las Cruces. When I have traveled I-40 from Amarillo, obviously there were no checkpoints.

The temp checkpoint I was refering too via the southern route was on I-25. My typo, sorry.

It looks like from these pages (search for "Miami, Oklahoma" there is also a BP checkpoint on I-44 outside Miami, Oklahoma I have driven I-44 to Miami but never NE of the town so I don't know. Anybody seen it recently? The case in link three below notes it was there in 1975. A forum post and news article show it was still there over the last couple of years. a bit tangent to the original post but now I am curious.

What is the authority for a Border Patrol checkpoint near Miami, Oklahoma? It's not anywhere close to being 100 miles or less from Mexico; heck, it's not even less than 100 miles from Texas.
