Apologies if this is in the wrong forum; I did a search and didn't find any answers to my question.

I'm going to rush-renew my passport and want to overnight the app to and from the passport center. The only address I can find, for both normal and expedited service is a PO BOX. I was going to use FedEx and I can't express the application to a po box. Does anyone know of a normal overnight address for the passport center? I can't find any information about this on the web site.

Have you considered paying a passport expediting service to handle this for you?

Are you anywhere near passport processing cities? We have one in Seattle and had our youngest son's passport done there in 1 day (4 hours), but we also needed to provide the tickets (copy of online reservation) that we were travelling within the next 2 weeks.

You can't-- you have to send it by USPS Express Mail.

If OP is in Des Moines (KDSM) the nearest office they could travel to is Chicago. I don't think you can overnight to a regional passport office, you have to use the national center's PO Box.

There is a street address for UPS or FedEx. I used when I sent my passport in for extra pages. I seem to recall the physical street address was printed on the application for extra pages that I used.

Ok - I found it in my UPS address book. There is a department # associated with the address - I'm guessing is probably related to the department that handles extra page requests or is used for my region (?) --

There was also a telephone # included with the entry in my UPS address book - I would call the National Passport Center at that # (877-487-2778) and verify the full physical address including the department for the ATTN to.

Verify this address with the Passport Center before using this:

That doesn't mean they are going to refuse delivery if you get the right street address, but the statement above is pretty clear.

Have you checked with your local post office? The post master should have all the pertinent passport application/renewal information, including the correct mailing address from your location.

I would double-check the location you have chosen if I were you, as the system doesn't make much sense to me. For example, although there is a passport office in Houston, TX, those in our area (southern Oklahoma) are required to send our renewals - even the expedites - to the Philadelphia office.

Probably quickest for the OP to just use USPS Express (next day) to the PO Box and handle it at the Post Office, unless the OP needs a true expedite in person at the passport office.

FWIW, when you mail something via USPS next day air, the postal service contracts with both FedEx and UPS for next day air and priority mail. From what I understand the USPS turns it over to FedEx (or UPS) in the origin city, FedEx (or UPS) puts it on their aircraft and delivers it to the destination city, and it then goes back to the USPS for delivery. As part of the contract, FedEx was able to place FedEx drop boxes at Post Office locations.

From what I understand, all passport requests first get "processed" (payment processing / validation) via an office outside Philadelphia (thus the PO Box address) -- the central office then sends the paperwork on to the appropriate regional office. The regional office then creates the passport and it is sent to you from there; original documents (i.e. old passport, birth certificate) are also returned from the regional office. Everything sent to me comes from Charleston, S.C. ---- (this is how the process was explained to me by a House Rep's office during the 'meltdown' - I had to contact them for assistance in speeding up what was supposed to be an expedited renewal).

Agreed. The OP just needs to make sure to send it to the correct office. (And not make the mistake I almost did of using the internet to look up the closest office, then attempting to mail it there.)

That makes more sense than the explanation I was given by my local postman. And now that you mention it, our passports have always been returned by the Houston office.

It's funny, though, that Houston manages to process the payment when someone hand-walks it through the system to expedite things.

If you can afford it, travel to a passport office.

When you the state department website to check on the status of your mailed in application, you'll see:

"The Online Passport Application Status Check is temporarily unavailable due to routine maintenance."

googling for this message, we find that many people are still waiting. If the passport office doesn't like your photos, you are screwed ... rush service will become never service.

I mailed my wife's renewal two weeks ago and am still waiting. Last year, my kids got their passports in 10 days. We are supposed to travel in July and I'm not feeling very good about this.

In March 2007, for a new passport, I made an appointment at the Miami Passport Agency for the next day, took my reservation confirmation and renewal application; paid the expedite fee and received my new passport the next day in the mail. I was impressed.

In February 2008, for additional pages, I Expressed Mailed it with the expedite fee and received it back (from Charleston) four days from sending.

Overall, very good service.
