NEXUS to Global Entry Transition Update
I recently transitioned from NEXUS to Global Entry and I was approved without needing to schedule an interview. I called IAH to verify that, and they assured me I did not need an interview. I just came through ATL using the kiosks for the first time, and I learned a couple things.
1. If you had your biometrics done for NEXUS, and after completing the GE application you are immediately approved without an interview, you are not done!
2. The kiosks accepted my passport and fingerprints without problem, but the CBP officer at the customs area exit really wanted to see the CBP sticker in my passport that I would have received at an interview. He let me through, but advised me that in the future it would be a problem.
3. The stickers are not just trophies, they are logged out to your passport, and they are not available except during GE interview hours, according to the ATL CBP supervisor. The supervisor wanted me to return to the point that I did my NEXUS interview to get the sticker...well that was in Champlain NY, and I doubt I will be back anytime in the next 5 years. So he finally admitted that any GE interview office can do the sticker, with an appointment, so essentially, an interview.
4. The kiosks are not completely up to date. I tried two, and while they accepted my flight number, neither had my departure city (MAN) on the list. But it doesn't matter! Both the CBP officers and I learned that you can put in another city (LHR in my case) and it will then spit out your little ticket. The ticket does not show the city, so no problem down the line.
So, the moral of the story is, if you are still waiting to get your NEXUS interview and you might get GE, get the sticker if possible. If you are doing a lateral into GE, give yourself a little extra time at your gateway city to drop by the office and get it, or be prepared to do some fast talking at the customs exit. Other than these hiccups, it was a sweet system, very fast.

The "point of interview" stuff is nonsense. I needed to update something in my files in person, I did so at a different Canadian airport than where I interviewed. No appointment, just walked in, per the instructions I got.
I would take what anyone in the U.S., including CBP folks, say about NEXUS with a grain of salt.

I did the NEXUS -> GlobalEntry crossover and got instant approval, with no mention of a sticker in GOES. When I recently used GlobalEntry to enter the country, the officer made no mention of a sticker; he simply took my little receipt and let me go.
I'm still planning to get my sticker.
Note: The CBP officer who told you to return to the NEXUS enrollment center for a GlobalEntry sticker must have been misinformed. The NEXUS centers in Canadian airports are not on the list of GlobalEntry interview locations; thus, it's doubtful that the officers would be equipped to issue the stickers for a program they do not manage at those locations.

This post is slighty off topic because I don't have NEXUS but it is about the sticker for global entry.
I have my global entry intervierw at LAX last month and at first was given a CBP sticker, and then told that because I was not yet approved, I could not keep the sticker, and would be contacted after approval about how to get a sticker.
Much to my shock (i.e. the interview was ugly to say the least) the GOES web site today says I am approved for Global Entry. The letter says I "can begin using the program immediately". With a return flight into ORD in August I would love to but don't have a sticker.
I have a long layover in ORD in July on the outbound and have to leave the sterile area to connect on a flight in the international terminal. Can I get the sticker at the CBP office in ORD then?
Or when I return to the USA, after using the Global Entry kiosk, can I get the sticker before encountering customs?
Or should I take the letter at its word and not worry about the sticker?
If it matters I am a permanent resident, non-U.S. citizen. In my case, the sticker would go on my green card.

I've used GlobalEntry at ORD quite a few times, and I've never been asked to show my sticker. Nor at JFK. (Perhaps ATL is more strict.)
I was in exactly your situation, and I picked up my GlobalEntry sticker at JFK with no problem. I simply walked in, explained that I was already an approved member, and the guy gave me a sticker (and an extra one for my new passport when I renew it in 2012).

Thx ESpen36, but a clarification: where exactly did you pick it up? At the CBP office in JFK land side (where one would have a GlobalEntry interview) or from one of the CBP officers while clearing customs and immigration (and if so, at what point exactly in the process: before you used the kiosk, before you cleared customers, etc.)? The CBP officer who interrogated me in LAX seemed to think this sticker was important, and so I don't want to mess up my GlobalEntry status on day 1.

All of this talk is making me a bit nervous. My fear about Global Entry is that it will all be a big "bait and switch": have people pay and biometrically register with the promise that you can usually walk through without any questions and then find all sorts of reasons to stop and question you, presenting as much hassle as the current system.

I nearly missed my connection in ORD in May because green card holders can no longer use the citizen lines.
For $100 over 6 years, if it gets me to the front of line to answer questions I'm happy to do it. That is not "as much hassle" as what I'm currently faced with.
Don't know about passports; in my case it would go on the back of my green card (I would imagine it goes on the back of ones U.S. passport). It is about 1/4" by 1/2" and simply says: "CBP". As for "goofy" the problem is that GlobalEntry is a "cardless" system, and CBP wants a way to identify likely GlobalEntry holders when the kiosk and other IT systems are down, so that the people who paid $100 get something for their money. A card would have been simpler.

I picked up the sticker at the landside office in T4, in the colorful enclosed glass hallway to the right of international arrivals. Look in the hallway for the sign that says "NSEERS" in big letters. It's the same CBP office for both GlobalEntry and NSEERS.
The sticker itself is very nondescript...it's just a little white rectangular sticker that says "CBP."
I agree with the other poster: an actual card would have been better. But presumably CBP decided to take full advantage of the MRZ on passports and green cards instead of issuing another card. Presumably the kiosk hardware eventually will be upgraded to accept a swipe of the RFID chip on the new e-passports.
(In case you didn't know, NSEERS is a special departure procedure involving a CBP exit interrogation/search for nationals of the following countries: Iran, Iraq, Libya, Sudan, and Syria. People traveling on passports issued by these countries are not allowed to depart the country without going through NSEERS and getting their boarding passes and I-94s stamped.)

That was me.

If CBP would at least mail the sticker, that would help.

I've used the Global Entry System many times and have never had to show the sticker when exiting. It was explained to me that the sticker would allow me to go to the front of the line if the kisoks were down to show that I was registered in the program since I would not have a receipt from the kiosk.

I'm a Nexus card holder who converted to Global Entry and used it for the first time last week coming back from Madrid. When I asked the CBP Officer in the office by the luggage area (NOT the terminal office) about the sticker, he just laughed and said "what do you want a sticker for?" I had no problems other than the officer collecting the printout didn't seem to have ever seen a GE printout.

I suppose the only benefit for the sticker is that if you get an X on your receipt, having the CBP sticker visible with the receipt will help out when you go up to the nearest booth for help...

Upcoming YYZ Nexus interview: advice, suggestions?
Hi Collective Wisdom:
Have my NEXUS interview at YYZ on 24 December. I am a Canadian living in Champaign, Illinois (guess what I do for a living
) and have a Green Card, I am hoping to do the Nexus-Global Entry transition once I get the Nexus stuff sorted. Chose YYZ as my in-laws live in the Toronto burbs. One slightly complicating factor is that I will be leaving for a London UK trip 16 December and will be flying into YYZ on 23 December without coming back home to CMI. This means I need to make extra sure I have all my bits and pieces with me when I leave for the UK.
Assuming all goes well with the Nexus stuff, what would be the next step to moving toward the GE? Can I start the process at my Nexus interview? Living makes getting to approved border offices a bit of a hassle.
Any and all comments, helpful hints, suggestions, and/or warnings would be most welcomed.
Cheers, thanks and safe travels,
DocD
