Food Through Security

What are the exact rules on bringing food through security? Everything on the TSA website seems to be about drinks or gel type foods such as yogurt and pudding.

I'll be overseas next week, and want to buy some chocolate. Would this be allowed through security?

I prefer my chocolates as a solid, not a gel or a liquid.

Chocolate is fine.

Bottom line is that if it is or resembles a liquid (anything from soup to sauce) you will have issues. Otherwise food can easily be transported through security.

I've taken Chocolate on just fine in MOST cases, but in one case they insisted on opening it up because it "looks like dense explosive material" on the X-ray. I think I just got a hungry TSO.

Lead crystal and dense chocolate/fudge are problematic for TSA. They should let it on, but be prepared for extra scrutiny.

Yep. If it is solid bars of chocolate, then it might have to get some secondary screening. Most likely a simple wipe of the bomb detection swab.

Might get more clarity in the T&S forum.

Once, in Europe - I forget where - I was told that chocolate with cream centers are a potential problem - otherwise, it's OK. Can't you check it?

Check customs declaration rules as well-- security might not be your only concern.

Peanut butter does the same thing.

I accidentally took a take-out carton with a very liquid creme brulee through security yesterday and no one said anything.

Because this topic has nothing to do with Delta Air Lines or the SkyMiles frequent flier program, the new home of this thread is now the Travel Safety/Security forum.

Thank you in advance for your understanding.
