from the tsa website today (may 2nd)

Quote:
Why do children need to be screened?

Good security means being prepared for unexpected threats. No one expects children to be used to harm anyone, but our officers have found weapons in children's toys and other items

That's why we need to screen everyone. We will not separate parents from their children, and our officers will treat children gently and with respect.
so will the tsa screen themselves and not separate themselves from their parents?

it also looks like the the tsa might have a new feature on it's home page called "why do..." as this followed "why the tsa must screen shoes" from may 14th

and now starting the clock for "think of the children" to be posted

How many times have we read or seen with our own eyes that this statement, like so many others the TSA makes, is just not true.

no, not at all but the statement "We will not separate parents from their children, and our officers will treat children gently and with respect" is a royal crock and has been documented by the media. this little goodie on the tsa website is a fluff 'n feel good piece put out by the tsa (along with one about screening shoes showing a photo of a shoe containing $40,000 in cash which cannot be accurate as there is not enough room in the shoe in the phot for $40,000 in $100's)

also, please do not take my posts/rants about the tsa personally but rather take them against an out of control, poorly managed and directed and disfunctional government agency

But then 100% of these verticaly challenged dangers to civil aviation are allowed to fly without showing any ID.

And we ALL know shining a UV light on an ID card is somehow a major part of preventing someone from making TATP in an airplane lav.

I don't feel safe anymore, Toto.

I have not seen the photo in question, but it is clearly NOT the mission of TSA to look for excess cash. Mission creep continues.

Quote: I was just wondering if you were objecting to the screening of children or some TSO's treatment of them. Some people think we should only be screening Middle Eastern-looking males, aged 20-40. I literally had a guy tell me "I'm a Christian bus driver! I shouldn't have to go through this!"

I don't take your rants about TSA personally, most of us screeners have the same rants.
everyone should be screened (including tsa personnel). what i object to is the statement which states that all children will be screened in the presence of their parents (as that is blatantly false as it does not happen 100%of the time) and the way that children are screened. as i'm sure you are aware, there are good screeners and bad screeners just like there are good employees and bad employees in every company-it's just that there is absolutely no accountability when it comes to the tsa breaking the rules, violating the rules or otherwise simply screwing up in a big way (i.e. bringing a gun to work or being told in advance that a screening test is coming-if it was me who "screwed up like that" [for lack of a better term] i'd be out of work faster than you could say michael chertoff)

So, what about parents who don't care for their own and allow them to get lost?

It's better than that. Last week the text that was w/that picture claimed it was 'illegal' to carry that much cash. This was then brought up on the blog w/a request to provide the statute that made it illegal to carry $40K in cash & presto! Text changed. (Please note, the requirement that cash in excess of $10K being taken out of the country be reported to Customs is completely different, especially in that the TSA is not Customs, but I digress).

Of course, as it was further pointed out on the blog later, since there is no law prohibiting the carrying of cash, regardless of amount or method of carrying, then how could one be accused of 'artfully concealing' that which is not prohibited in the first place?

Acknowledged. I have no doubt you and your co-workers have legitimate rants.

Regardless of why one would carry about what a reasonable person would consider a large sum of cash, for their sake I should hope it is artfully concealed!

I thought it was because many children are annoying on aircraft and screening them would discourage parents from bringing them. Oh, wait . . . that would count as "customer friendly."
