Politicians criticizing Chertoff
Congressional critics representing Northern border states were anything but impressed with Chertoff's rhetoric.
His department has proved incapable of implementing a 2004 law on border security, and Chertoff "frankly has as much credibility on telling people to 'grow up' as Geoffrey the Giraffe," said Rep. Tom Reynolds, a Buffalo-area Republican.
Added Sen. Norm Coleman, a Minnesota Republican, "Secretary Chertoff's comments that those objecting to the plan need to 'grow up' indicates that the department still doesn't understand the practical effects of DHS policies on the everyday lives of border community residents."
Sen. Patrick Leahy, Democratic chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, said the move does nothing to enhance security and will only hurt the economy. "When it comes to the Northern Border, the muddled thinking and poor planning at DHS seems to have no bounds, and the agency that botched Katrina seems to have no shame and no memory to boot," Leahy said.

You know, it's about time. I realize that Chertoff was just following the law with the Real ID thing, but telling people who actually had the audiacy to criticize his other plans to grow up - that's going too far. This is a democracy, and he must listen to others perspectives and not tell others to grow up just because they disagree with him.
It's refreshing to see some unrest among even Republicans.

I love the 'don't blame me if another 9/11 happens...' line in his testimony. Seeing as how he doesn't have to wait in any of the lines he creates, he has no problem making them. Can a cabinet Secretary be impeached?
I think he should be forced to perpetually stand at the end of an immigration line at LAX, waiting, and everytime another passenger arrives, they get to cut in front of him. If he ever makes it to the immigration desk, he should spend the next 48 hours in the medical exam room with several glove wrapped fists (at the same time) making sure that there are no anally smuggled drugs or explosives.

OK, so if, according to Skeletor:
So then how is REAL ID supposed to now keep us safer if the birth certificates required to get a REAL ID-compliant DL are "hard to verify?"
..... checking birth certificates placed an "enormous burden" on agents because such documents come from thousands of jurisdictions and are hard to verify.

By the way, Chertoff is complaining about Congressional oversight:

No, Chertoff, YOU don't get it. You are a piata and a laughing stock because of your draconian and misguided policies. YOU are not supposed to be at war with Congress and the American people, yet that's EXACTLY what you're doing. Ignore any good advice from the public or the people within your own ranks.
I heard on the radio today that Chertoff announced that all travelers from Europe will have to enter their information in advance on a DHS web site - duplicating the information that the airlines already collect and submit. If true, this effectively neuters the VWP, and gains NOTHING, absolutely NOTHING over the current process. It just hassles people.
I can see how this came down: "How do we eliminate the VWP?", "Duh, Boss, we can't do that, but we can require everybody to submit their information to us, then we can check the paperwork.", "Good work, Smedley, you deserve a big bonus for stopping terrorism".
