"CLEAR" quick security lines in NYC

As the CLEAR system finally seems to make inroads at LGA (finger B) and JFK (terminals 1,4,7), does anybody know what are the plans for expanding it and why American Airlines seems to shy away from it ? The length of their lines especially at LGA finger D should be a strong incentive...

Check out the Clear website, I'm sure they won't hold back in beating their own chest about it.

Many U.S.-based premium/frequent fliers (myself included) view CLEAR as a slap in the face. At several airports, CLEAR has basically bribed the airport authority to eliminate frequent traveler lines (e.g. lines for elite status passengers and first class pasengers), and replace them with CLEAR program. Hence, a passenger that has already paid for a first class ticket would have to pay an annual fee to CLEAR to take advantage of first-class line.

I think that U.S. airlines realize it's unpopular with their best customers, and hence haven't been advocating for it.

Other than cutting the line there is zero benefit to CLEAR. (Well, it does make your wallet lighter )

You have to ask yourself...
  • Would you trust a private company that is conspiring with the government to not divulge your sensitive personal data?
  • Would you pay for the privilege?
  • Would you do so with close to zero benefit?
I sure wouldn't!

I had not quite seen it that way and have no idea whether you are right or just paranoid. This being said, now that the First / Elite lines are gone for whatever reason, an alternative is needed and since CLEAR is the only one even remotely ready, I'll take it. I am not trying to give CLEAR a certifcate of ethics, just to go through security faster. Even if they did what you suggest, the point is that they have succeeded and that most priority lines are gone. So what do we do next ?

Oh come on. Do you actually believe that the elite lines went away and the CLEAR lines were brought in by coincidence? Would it change your mind if you knew that the airport authorities get a cut of the revenue CLEAR takes in?

What should you do? The first thing to do is to keep your $100 in your pocket and not give it to such a sleazy overpromising organization as the CLEAR folks...

My problem is when the Elite lines are gone and the CLEAR lines have NOT been brought in...

I would complain to the airlines for letting the Elite lines disappear.

yes, microsoft and google collect more data on me everyday than the gov't could ever hope to

Would you pay for the privilege?
99 bucks a year is a lot less than I'll be paying in '08 in "sept 11 security fees" to support unemployable bureaucrats at the tsa

Would you do so with close to zero benefit?
plenty of benefit to me, as a frequent VX and B6 flyer, I equate legacy airline status with RJs, connecting flights, no IFE, and no upgrade, no legroom, so I'd much rather not be an elite, just give me the security speed-through and I'll really pity the 1Ks and AA plats zooming across the country on little planes with irritable FAs

Our airport authority is trying to build a subway line to run to IAD that will also benefit local commuters. Much better they get it than Kip and his army of maroon-sweatered ID checkers.

Except that the money really won't go to the Metro extension.

You'll still pay Kippie and his band of _______s. You'll have to pay Clear on top. For those of us that fly a lot or pay-up for F/J tickets, it's another tax.

Clear is just like converting freeway lanes to service roads and replacing the expressway with toll roads. The "State" (or airport authority) benefits, but the customer has to pay more for something they got already. I know a bit about airport franchise contracts - once something like this is in place, any potential competition must stop. The only way the airlines will have a say is if they revise their contracts to specify that they get an elite/F/J line.

Legalized extortion.
