TSA tweaking carry-on rules

http://www.boston.com/business/artic...arry_on_rules/

Love this part:

"We now have some discretion at the checkpoint," Naccara said.

Vs. the 'make it up as we go along' most screeners seem to abide by...

But will they let half full bottles through?

Also, travelers can carry containers bigger than 3.4 ounces, as long as they are holding roughly 3 ounces of liquid or gel material and can fit inside the same quart-sized bag. Put another way, half-empty 6- and 8-ounce containers of toothpaste, shampoo, conditioner, and mouthwash are now allowed
If codified in text on the TSA website and clearly briefed to all screeners, this should put a stop to much of the confiscation insanity including unlabeled bottles and perhaps even to the occasional confiscation of empty water bottles and other such containers.

I still think that if they were going to have a baggie policy, they should have made the rule, "any container of any size that will fit in the quart baggie." The liquid-restriction would be the same but the opportunity for power-tripping and confusion would be much less.

But, but, but...isn't half of an 8 oz container FOUR ounces???

My hairspray is in a 10 oz bottle-how about if it's only 1/4 full??

Oh, the fun we'll have with this one!!

"Because of the change with liquids, gels, and aerosols this year, it could result in a little bit more of a delay this year."

The understatment of the year.

In otherwords, "our european counterparts can't think in ounces, so we have to harmonize our rules with theirs or we'll look like a bunch of moronic monkies in the eyes of our visitors"

You're implying they don't already look like moronic monkeys.

The average-USA-visitor-who-has-never-been-here-before has no clue that they are moronic monkeys but they'll be the first to tell their friends at home that the USA is nice, but they hire thieves to guard the airport.

And why should they think in ounces? International standard is liters and grams, not ounces. Just because we can't adapt to ISO, doesn't mean the rest of the world has to be stuck in the dark ages

There was another thread a few days ago about how one traveler was told by TSA personnel that changes were being made to the liquids policy, but that they wouldn't go into effect until 11/29 (sorry, I can't find the thread now ) -- that may be the reason that tsa.gov doesn't reflect the changes spoken of in the article.

American Airlines is clearly stating 3.4oz/100ml on their web site.

"Liquids must be carried in individual containers not exceeding 3.4 ounces/100 ml.

All liquid containers must be carried in a separate clear plastic, zip-top bag (see example at right) that does not exceed 8 inches x 8 inches (20 cm x 20 cm) or is quart size. Items must fit in the bag comfortably and the bag must be completely closed. "

Is it just me or do they keep going back and for on the allowing and not allowing liquids for carry on? I could have sworn I read an article in the paper alittle while back that said they were relaxing the rules a bit.
