More changes coming?

Heard a news report today while driving back to the hotel: supposedly TSA is planning on changing the rules to allow "clear" bottles of water, but passengers must take a drink from them.

They also had a nice set of quotes from a congressman lambasting TSA over "fighting the last war".

They also had a sound bite from Mary Schiavo saying that TSA still is not doing enough with shoes.

Sigh.

Sorry, no links, it's not listed as a printed story on the radio station web site.

That is the most rational thing I've heard so far during all this mess. I sure hope it's true.

Who's Mary Schiavo?

I still say that sealed bottles should be okay.

Link to audio story here (assume it will be up for a while, it was posted at 14:08 today, and is titled: "Will the TSA Revise Its Airport Security Procedures?")

http://www.wtop.com/?sid=595567&nid=92

See if this direct link works:

http://www.wtop.com/emedia/33289.mp3

The congressman that lambasted TSA is Rep. Linder.

Mary Schiavo is a lawyer that's worked on aviation safety matters. Details here:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mary_Schiavo

I'll let you draw your own conclusions.

If this is true then sanity may be returning. Couple a bottle of water with say a moderate amount of personal tolietries and I think 90% of the traveling public would be happy.

Bottle of water, cup of coffee in the morning, and modest toiletries would be a very good thing. Especially toothpaste & makeup since those can be hard to get after a late evening flight. The "TSA toiletry tribute" to vendors in each city can add up fast.

That'd make things more convenient a little bit, but not scrapping this restriction entirely is irrational. It's not like someone pouring liquids/gels in a doubled ziplog bags tucked into their pants/socks, taped onto their legs or near their rear-end/groin will get caught under the current procedures at US airports.

I for one having travelled four times since liquids were banned would like to see the current rules stay in place permanently. Seriously.

And why is that? Please tell us, which of the new rules do you like and why?

I have to say that I have never voluntarily relied on an airline to feed and water me. I've been stuck with my wife & kids on flights that were diverted, late, etc. Many times we were the ONLY people with food & drink for ourselves but more importantly, our kids. I don't like being sealed inside an aluminum tube and at the mercy of someone else for food and drink.

Why weren't you banging that drum last month? Last year? During the 1990s?

Why are you all of a sudden so afraid of liquids?

The threat of liquid explosives has been well known for many years.

Why weren't you lobbying to protect us from scary liquids all this time?

Next time you get stuck on a 4+ hour ground hold on, especially an un-airconditioned UA 737 (they can't run the a/c packs on the ground on that plane due to a safety issue) or under-air-conditioned RJ, where the FAs either run out of water or refuse to serve it, you may disagree.
