Fishhooks?

Post 9/11 the TSA decided that fishhooks were an unsafe sharp object. By fishhooks I mean flyfishing fly hooks - no more than 1/2" long at best. Will these be allowed again now that they've modified the sharp object policy?

Fishhooks were an unsafe sharp object? You're kidding...I never knew that. What did the TSA think was going to happen? Terrorists start fly casting in the aisles to take out the crew? Pull the flight deck door open by landing a hook around the knob and using strong tackle to get it unlatched? At least they didn't start confiscating passengers' Orvis catalogs as weapons manuals

As far as I knew, this was one of those "discretionary" things. My boss only objected to the big hooks. But to be safe, I would check them. I know thats not the policy, but that is what I would recommend, especially since just about everything is "discretionary" now.

Any idea how I can confer this to my local screeners?

First go to the website www.tsa.gov and print off the prohibited items list and take it with you. What you are dealing with is the discretion of the supervisor. Second, keep calm when discussing the issue. Third ask them what the hazard is? How can it be used to take over an airplane. Hopefully a lot of the nonsense will stop come 12/22/05

I'm glad that where your working everyone follows the rules. But in most airports the sups do what they want as you can tell from the posts on here. Telling him to confront the sup with the prohibited items list is only going to make it harder for him. I would recommend that you put them in the checked luggage and avoid all the bulll at the checkpoint.

If someone is being unreasonable, they should be challenged. Unless you're checking luggage anyway, you might want to carry them on and hold your ground.

Let me know how challenging them works out for you. I'm just trying to be honest. If its worth the hassle to you, go ahead, but you won't win. They'll make it their business to make sure you don't.

So much for consistency, for "World Class Security, World Class Customer Service." What a crock of ...!

The lack of consistency has been a ..... of mine from the beginning. I'm not saying that all of us are bad or on power trips. I'm just saying that the possibility exists and if you want to get through screening as quickly as possible, don't challange them while your traveling. Wait and do it after. I hate seeing people have to leave and go back down to baggage to check something when they could have done it in the beginning. I know there is no policy against fishhooks, but in reality, some sups won't let them through.

Thanks for your responses. You're right, it's a huge inconvenience to be held up at the checkpoint, but it seems to me the most effective time to challenge is when you need to get through the checkpoint. At least you can call for a supervisor.

How do you recommend we challenge this type of thing after the fact? Also, how could you know the screeners will be unreasonable in the first place if you don't try to bring the item through?
