Thanks for your responses. You're right, it's a huge inconvenience to be held up at the checkpoint, but it seems to me the most effective time to challenge is when you need to get through the checkpoint. At least you can call for a supervisor.
How do you recommend we challenge this type of thing after the fact? Also, how could you know the screeners will be unreasonable in the first place if you don't try to bring the item through?
