I can't believe this. Michael Chertoff is on CNN right now talking about how it is all the Department of Homeland Security's bailiwick now.

And they have suspended some of the provisions of the Clean Air Act until 15 September 2005.

And they have lifted maximum hours limits for truckers.

This is certainly odd ... where does FEMA currently fall in the federal organizational structure? Seems they should be running the show, not DHS.

The "online" news I just read stated DHS was "assisting" in appropriate area's, nothing about "being in charge". Several other federal agencies are "assisting" as well. DOD, ect.

FEMA and the Coast Guard are under the DHS umbrella. This all happenedin the same motion that US Customs and Immigration merged.

Your right. With FEMA under the DHS span of responsibility, its really the same game, just a different 3 letter identifier.

FWIW - And I'm not a big fan of DHS. or any beaurocracy, what's wrong with hoping they do a good job when one is surely needed. I sure hope they do.

And FEMA is not as bad as TSA

And hoping for a good job is alot different than believing it will happen.

I think it's just stupid to mix "protecting us from bad guys" with "protecting us from rain."

If you think about it, the same sort of rationale could be used to merge the police and the fire department.

FEMA will do a good job, but Chertoff and the DHS will take credit for it.

Either way; I'm not going to let my disdain for TSA/DHS overshadow my hope that FEMA delivers in this case and those poor souls get help. If DHS comes out looking good -- that means the victims got some relief. Only time will tell; and from the looks on the news, there is little of that.

Did DHS take any credit when FEMA handed out millions to ineligible hurricane "victims" in Dade County Florida last year who filed fraudulent claims for nonexistent damage - while rejecting claims from real victims who were impacted further north?

I certainly hope they do a better job this year. I don't care if Santa Claus and the Tooth Fairy take credit for the work - as long as those poor people are taken care of.
