Chertoff: "Get used to biometric tests"

Yahoo News article
International travelers should get used to having their fingerprints taken or their irises scanned because traditional airport security tests are outdated and open to abuse, a leading U.S. official said on Thursday.

"As a general principle, certainly in the area of international travel, biometrics is the way forward in virtually every respect," said Michael Chertoff, U.S. Homeland Security Secretary.

"When we screen based on names, we're screening on the most primitive and least technological basis of identification -- it's the most susceptible to misspelling, or people changing their identity, or fraud.

"Biometrics is the way ahead."

Chertoff was speaking to reporters after meeting British officials during a four-day visit to Europe to discuss transatlantic security cooperation.

On Monday he visited the Netherlands, which will pilot a scheme later this year to allow passengers flying between New York's JFK airport and Amsterdam's Schiphol airport to pass through border controls using a biometric card.

From Doppy in the fingerprint thread:

Where exactly are we getting Al Queda members' finger prints in the first place?
Just substitute "iris scan" for "finger prints".

From the same article:

The United States hopes the use of biometric testing will help prevent potential terrorists entering the country and cut down confusion about who is allowed in and who is not. (Emphasis mine)

Exactly how will this biometric crap protect us when terrorists
can simple waltz into the U.S. through our wide open border
with Mexico? Do you think they're getting fingerprinted or having their irises scanned? I wish the Department of Fatherland Security
would use one-tenth of the budget they spend annoying
and harassing people at the airport and instead, spend it on
securing our virtually non-existent Southern border!

Even illegal aliens generate payroll taxes and Social Security revenue for the US. They can't collect on SS, but they contribute.

That, plus how this administration WANTS people who will take low-paying jobs, we ain't gonna secure the Mexico border anytime soon.

Why doesn't the "Overlord"-wannabe Chertoff just say: "Get used to strip searches too".

No thanks. I will, however, probably have to get used to Chertoff's attempts at self-promotion every couple of weeks. It sure seems that way.

Really? How much payroll tax can they generate if they are paid cash under the table? And how do they get Social Security numbers except via a form of identity theft?

Whatever Social Security funds the USA "saves" from this lack of collection, it pays out in the form of increased Emergency Room costs, and a need for more infrastructure including schools.

Good point. Too bad Arabs and Hispanics tend to have similar looks. I hope everyone crossing the southern border are in fact from Latin America. But what if they aren't? Or is that beyond the fathoming of those in DeeCee?

You would be surprised by how many undocumented are not paid under the table. Many undocumented workers are paid by check on the payroll and they have social security taxes withdrawn, money they will never see. I've read that they contribute millions of dollars annually to the SS coffers. Yes, they are using fake social security cards. You can walk down Mission Street here in San Francisco any day of the week and hear guys say "micas, micas" (Mexican Spanish for I.D. cards) which they sell for about $100.00 for a fake s.s. card and fake CA I.D. card.

Comrade Chertoff in effect already said that. Remember the article about those x-ray scanners that can pretty much see everything under your clothes? He told the Senate that he didn't want to get into endless debate over privacy concerns and he was going to implement them.

How much for a photo of Chertoff's genital anatomy?

Chertoff can kiss my irradiated posterior!!!

Either way, he's out of a job on Jan 20, 2009, if he lasts that long.

Might need some enhancement technology for that.

Wide open border with Mexico? At least that border has a fence.
You want wide-open border, look to the north.
Many US checkpoints at that border 'de-staff' at night...leaving an orange traffic cone as the sentry.

A fence? You're kidding, right? That "fence" sure has a lot of
holes in it, considering the millions of illegals that have passed
through in recent years.

That fence is about as good as keeping out illegal aliens
as the Titanic was at keeping out sea water after
striking the iceberg.

That being said, if your point is that terrorists can sneak
in from Canada, I agree. We only have to worry about
illegals coming in through the southern border, but terrorists
can make it across both the Mexican border AND the
Canadian border. I wonder if Chertoff is concerned?

Go to Walt Disney World, they use biometric finger readers at turnstiles to help catch guests who share (non-transferable) admission tickets. Disney's biometric readers scan coarse characteristics like length of fingers, not fingerprints. Airports would probably need something more detailed.

How much would it cost to build a wall as stout as the Great Wall of China along our borders? People entering illegally have wire cutters to get through ordinary chain link fences.

Disney hints:
