Chertoff: "Get used to biometric tests"

International travelers should get used to having their fingerprints taken or their irises scanned because traditional airport security tests are outdated and open to abuse, a leading U.S. official said on Thursday. "As a general principle, certainly in the area of international travel, biometrics is the way forward in virtually every respect," said Michael Chertoff, U.S. Homeland Security Secretary. "When we screen based on names, we're screening on the most primitive and least technological basis of identification -- it's the most susceptible to misspelling, or people changing their identity, or fraud. "Biometrics is the way ahead." Chertoff was speaking to reporters after meeting British officials during a four-day visit to Europe to discuss transatlantic security cooperation. On Monday he visited the Netherlands, which will pilot a scheme later this year to allow passengers flying between New York's JFK airport and Amsterdam's Schiphol airport to pass through border controls using a biometric card. |

Exactly how will this biometric crap protect us when terrorists
can simple waltz into the U.S. through our wide open border with Mexico? Do you think they're getting fingerprinted or having their irises scanned? I wish the Department of Fatherland Security would use one-tenth of the budget they spend annoying and harassing people at the airport and instead, spend it on securing our virtually non-existent Southern border! :mad: |

You would be surprised by how many undocumented are not paid under the table. Many undocumented workers are paid by check on the payroll and they have social security taxes withdrawn, money they will never see. I've read that they contribute millions of dollars annually to the SS coffers. Yes, they are using fake social security cards. You can walk down Mission Street here in San Francisco any day of the week and hear guys say "micas, micas" (Mexican Spanish for I.D. cards) which they sell for about $100.00 for a fake s.s. card and fake CA I.D. card. |

That "fence" sure has a lot of holes in it, considering the millions of illegals that have passed through in recent years. That fence is about as good as keeping out illegal aliens as the Titanic was at keeping out sea water after striking the iceberg. That being said, if your point is that terrorists can sneak in from Canada, I agree. We only have to worry about illegals coming in through the southern border, but terrorists can make it across both the Mexican border AND the Canadian border. I wonder if Chertoff is concerned? |
Go to Walt Disney World, they use biometric finger readers at turnstiles to help catch guests who share (non-transferable) admission tickets. Disney's biometric readers scan coarse characteristics like length of fingers, not fingerprints. Airports would probably need something more detailed.
