An airport source told TODAY'S TMJ4 that the knife that caused this problem had a blade that was less than two inches long.

There was at least one intelligent person on the flight:
"Unless someone was maliciously waving a two inch knife around, I wouldn't be too concerned about it," said frequent flier Michael Pfeifer. "Traveling, flying is becoming harder and harder."

It's better to be safe than sorry, even though it's frustrating," said traveler Robert Harris.

I don't see any threat from a 2-inch knife, especially if the FA has control of it. Why not lock it up in their luggage, or a food cart?
as goalie said, baaaaahhh
This was beyond stupid. I could do much more damage with the power cable for my MacBook Pro, than this little thing could do. Even my MacBook Pro could be used for a very forceful blow.

8 inches of blade is safer than 2 inches

However, if you take two 3.99 inch sharp pointed knives and join them to be called "scissors," TSA says the are less a threat than a 2 inch knife and approved as carry-on. Don't you feel safer already?

A friend who teaches self defense once demonstrated how to use your belt to disarm a person armed with a 10" knife. Several ounces of flying metal belt buckle to someone's head can cause some real damage. So at DFW, 95% of native Texans boarding planes possess the deadliest non-firearm weapons possible.

Good rule: anytime you hear that someone is doing "something" out of an abundance of caution that "something" is always quite stupid.
