Sealed liquid scan

I saw the sign at ORD and thought perhaps the liquid ban was being ended.

So I asked. No such luck. It is not for us. It is only for baby formula.

Considering the check point issues with infant food, this might be a baby step in the direction of common sense.

Does anyone know how a "sealed liquid scan" works? Magic flashlight? Spectrum analyzer? Voodoo? Miss Cleo?

But will it address the issue of TSOs who feel the need to determine that a parent has brough 'too much' baby food for the voyage?

Just wish someone could enact a TSA ban that would be enforceable.

Probably only for a select few TSOs who have dealt with the problem themselves.

Not sure about the ones the TSA is looking at, but a company in the UK that makes them has a video on their site showing a unit with this description

The Kromek Bottle Scanner is a desktop inspection unit that can quickly verify or classify liquids, gels or aerosols based on multi-spectral analysis of x-rays using a combination of Kromek detectors and the proprietary ADMIT algorithm.

The system scans, analyses and classifies liquids in under 30 seconds, with a high degree of reliability and accuracy. The system can handle various shapes and sizes of sealed glass, plastic and metal containers. Additional materials can be added to the system database and the user can specify these as required.

They put the bottle in, press a button on the screen, and it says pass or fail once it's scanned.

Datasheets and more here - http://www.kromek.com/

It seems like a pretty cool machine for not a lot of money (though you can be sure the TSA will spend way more per unit)

Just as good as the nude-o-scopes that "scan you" in 5-7 seconds, and actually take 30-60 seconds and still require a pat-down just to be sure.

Can you imagine the backup created scanning tubes of toothpaste, water etc. (probably an average of 4-8 per passenger) at 30 seconds each?

Even if they work as advertised, this is probably why they are not "out there".

Now this is funny: your conclusions is what i have said over the months in multiple threads as to why TSA will not test all LGAs, despite a few forms of technology being out there. Like you say, as I have said, it's too time consuming. But I also think it's your time, so if it were up to me I would allow all LGAs and however long it takes to get through the checkpoint, so be it.

But pretty much everyone here disregarded what I have said, even you. I guess now you have had a change of heart?

So Kippie was lying when he said TSA was developing technology that would allow them to relax the restrictions by Fall 2009 and get rid of them by the end of 2010? Who would have thought he'd lie to us??

But we're supposed to trust Blogdad Bob when he says TSA is developing technology (that's already developed, dammit) for WBI automated target recognition? Riiiiiight.
