How big of a computer can I get through security without removing from bag?

Yes, this is a TS/S question, and not a Travel Tech question

I remember reading something about TSA changing their rules on machines with screens due to the delays caused by iPads. I'm looking into getting a new computer, probably a netbook, and want to know what the rules are regarding size, so that I don't have to take it out of my bag.

Electronic items smaller than the standard sized laptop should not need to be removed from your bag or their cases.

I'll see what happens on Monday with my 8.5" screen computer.

Electronic items smaller than the standard sized laptop should not need to be removed from your bag or their cases. It’s that simple.
Sometimes I travel with my small netbook (10"), and when travelling in the US, if I forget to take it out of my bag I get a reprimand for not doing what I was supposed to do

So long as the bag isn't cluttered up with other stuff yes. That was the next statement on the website. If the bag is full of other things blocking the view of the laptop, it will be given more screening.

This is another case of TSA consistent inconsistency. I'd say a good rule of thumb for this type of situation is this: if folds & has a keyboard (a laptop or netbook), take it out or get a X-Ray friendly case; if it's one solid piece (iPad, Kindle, Nook, other tablet-type PC), you're probably OK leaving it in your bag.

I was just chastised by TSA screener "Walden" at SEA for not taking my 10-inch netbook out of my thin, fabric briefcase.
